Best school of magic against dragons?

Post » Sun Jan 05, 2014 9:27 pm

Hi,

I play as a 1h redguard warrior with a shield on legendary difficulty. I am lvl 49 and base values are (250/380/250).

Today I completed the watchtower-quest to trigger the appearance of dragons. And here is the problem: I get destroyed by the dragon bites nearly one-hit, their breath isn't really a problem for me. I came to the conclusion that a school of magic could help me to defeat the dragons better since archery isn't a option for me because I hate gear swapping.

So my question is, what school of magic should I choose? I thought of either conjuration or alliteration (conjuration to create tankpets, alliteration because of the spell dragonhide) but wouldn't destruction be a good choice too or is it way too weak in higher levels? I thought in particular of frost spells to slow the dragon down, but I am really unsure.

What would you prefer?

Thanks

Destruction is gonna be very weak for you atm...And conjuration doesn't really make tankpets at low levels.

I'd say try and use some arrows.

Dragons usually don't cause stagger when attacking, so you can just lightning storm their asses until they're toast or even damage them nonstop while they're flying over you.

Lighting is generally the way to go as fewer dragon is resistant to it, but do not bother with destruction on Legendary difficulty, will not do any real damage, at least not unless it is maxed out with ALL the perks related to damage and then some.

Also, you would be swapping equipped weapons anyway since destruction takes up the hands in Skyrim.

Most or all Illusion spells don't work on Dragons
Alteration isn't good offensive (but defensive it's very useful)
Restoration for health is good
Conjuration is another person attacking them. No harm in that
Destruction is probably your best bet. Pure dps, no tactics involved. Just point and shoot.

Bows and Crossbows.

Conjured creatures are easily killed by dragons, and once killed, will explode, damaging anything near it, even you, but probably not the dragon because most likely it flew away.

In using a Missile of any kind:

  • Missile Spells (Firebolt, Lightning Bolt, Ice Spike, Icy Spear) will always fly in a straight line.
  • Bows will always shoot in an arc, rising a bit, then dropping. The heavier your bow, better range. (Might be draw speed, not weight)
  • Crossbows will shoot fast, fly straight, and then drop, with decent range.

Concentration spells don't have much of a range, and can be fairly weak.

A good tip is to put a rune down where a dragon would hover or land. If it doesn't land, put a rune below it and set it off with a spell like firebolt or flames.
