which Graphical style do you prefer?

Post » Tue Jan 07, 2014 8:10 pm

so, when it comes to video games, there is two Graphic styles that are used most often

"realistic" Graphics, as seen in CoD, Left 4 Dead, and to an extent TES

and Cell Shading, a more "cartoonish" art style, as seen in many JRPGs and even games like Borderlands, and the Legend of Zelda...

Now my question for you today is, which Art Style do you prefer?

I prefer Cell-Shading to be honest, as it just seems to age better... you look at the more realistic HD Graphic style and after a few years it just looks terrible as newer games using this Art Style usually handle it better..
while years after a titles release, Cell-shading doesn't look half bad, simply because it was never intended to look realistic..

So, which do you prefer?

I like cell shading, I've only been having a very small time compared to most others on here. Some have been playing longer than I've been alive...

Alice Madness Returns, Ico, Journey.

Though the most recent Prince of Persia looked lovely...

One big advantage of Cel-shading is that it can be pretty timeless if it's done well, like Okami. While realistic games tend to look bit outdated shortly after something more realistic looking game is released.

Not fond of "realistic" looking humans in games, too much uncanny valley. Cartoony designs are much better in that regard, like in The Walking Dead or whatever.

Realistic. Cel shaded only works for a few games for me. Too often it's just a "look at me i'm such a misunderstood indie art game dev".

I like both if they're used right.

What about games that aren't cel-shaded, but are still very cartoony, like Ratchet and Clank and Beyond Good and Evil? Frankly, they're a hell of a lot more common than cel-shaded visuals.

Freddo and the OP are correct, though. Cel-shaded games and those that opt for stylization age much better than "realistic" ones. Realism's all well and good, but no matter how much of a pinnacle of technology they are at release, they'll become obsolete soon enough, and embarrassing years down the line.

"Which style do you prefer?"

Yes. (well, as long as the "realistic" isn't that whole brown/grey thing.)
