New Installation, constant crashing and freezing

Post » Wed Jan 08, 2014 10:59 pm

I recently purchased the Legendary version and did a complete install (wasn't offered an option just to download the DLCs by Steam, so 6 hours wasted downloading), installed only a few appearance mods, and started a new game. Every time the Nord would say "Empire loves their damned lists" the game would completely stop responding. I'd have to go to Task Manager to kill it.

So, I tried running BOSS and saw that the Update.ESM was full of errors. Ran TESVedit and cleaned them up (had to do it for the DLCs, as well). Started the game up again and was able to create a character. However, after I escaped the tower and caught up with the guard I would CTD every time the dragon breathed. Okay. Time to roll in the big guns. I downloaded Wrye Bash.

Wrye Bash told me that Update.ESM was out of place, that it had to follow the Apache hair mods. Odd. However, when I did that, my saves all went from orange to blue. I went back into the game and was able to actually make it all the way through the escape, but when I reached the slope down from the cave and the guard told me about his uncle the smith, the game crashed.

I'm not sure what else to do. According to BOSS, my minimal mods are all clean, and when I say minimal, I am talking the full Apache plus the two extra hair sets and a couple of body replacers, SKSE, Sky UI, and that's it. I have a couple of companion mods installed but not activated.

I blame the update. Before the update I ran the game pretty smoothly.

Any help?

First thing to try is to delete the INI and Prefs files in My Documents/My Games/Skyrim and let the game generate those again. They are not removed on a reinstall, so they can mess with a new install of the game.

The other thing to try is to Uninstall the few mods you have added, then make sure the game works, then put the mods back on. I learned the hardway reinstalling these games to test the game stock before adding mods, even if I am using the same mod mix I always use.

Now, when you were poking around in Wrye Mash, did you make a Bashed Patch? If you did make a Bashed Patch, did you go through all the choices and make sure the parts you want are included? Note, most things you want included, choose each on the left column, and see if there is anything on the right to choose.

Did you have Skyrim before you bought Skyrim Legendary Edition? If so then you need to http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1462092-faqs-for-skyrims-legendary-edition/ this before you can finish the installation of Skyrim Legendary Edition.

CCNA - Thanks! I'll look into that.

Leonardo - Thanks, but yes, I did enter the code and re-acitvated (though I hadn't the FIRST time I did the reinstall - another 6 hours previously down the drain and no DLCs) so my DLCs are installed now. I'm not using my previous saves, starting over completely, so the saves are not the issue.
