Archery in ESO

Post » Thu Jan 09, 2014 2:33 pm

Hello all,

i have been playing online games since the early days of ultima online and have played most online games through the years,

My favourite was Daoc and i really enjoyed playing archers, in daoc you were able to choose which arrow type you was using to change damage type, the sound of drawing the bow etc

I have watched a few videos of the game but as it is in Beta so nothing you see can be taken as gospel,

will there be "Archers" in the game not the hunter types of wow etc with pets, but archers with daggers and use of magic,

from what ive seen most of at the video releases are Hand to Hand or mages nothing about archery,

it would be good to see some form of character video release showing this style of gameplay,

looking forward for the release of this game as it looks good in graphics and game animations,

has anyone got any links to archery in this game?

Halude

Take a look at this Quakecon video

There shows some archery (bear in mind it is being streamed and recorded so the sound is a bit off.

The ammo is unlimited like it is in Neverwinter and with the soft lock as well.

I have played the Hunter Ranger in Neverwinter and I think it makes an easy game easier. I also have a horrible feeling that archery in ESO will either be overpowered with homing arrows for the soft lock or underpowered.

They also have a reduced range of 50 yards in ESO from watching videos which to me is not a long enough range. As an archer in real life I know about this topic from a practical stand point in history and modern day, you could say its a passion of mine. One reason I love archery in the single player games of ESO.

So my preconceptions to what archery will be like in ESO will be you lock onto the target and then the character model will auto face it as you power up the shot and release. Same as in Neverwinter where you soft lock onto a target and the character will rotate on the spot as you shoot at the mobs or players.

DAoC was the only MMO to do archery half right with the ranges and different arrows you could use. Not sure on Darkfall though as I never played it.

Thanks, I only played Neverwinter for 2 days (and a melee), so this explanation is nice and I can assume how this could work (we will see in the end) with the soft lock and the cross for ranged attacks now, because seriously I was not in a position to imagine how someone should hit a fast moving target - and I'm talking about an opponent player, not PvE mobs. But perhaps the arrow is fast like a bullet, so ego-shooter style, than it is imaginable, but not preferable due to immersion for all the archers out there.

Would the assumption be right, if I say that only active dodges/rolls (beside perhaps skills protecting from projectiles) would then protect someone to be hit? Because the soft lock enables the archer to hit moving targets, also if they hop like a rabbit?

I don't know about the game mechanics all I can say is its all based on what I have seen and read over the past year of watching this game develop.

I honestly hope I am wrong about some of my thoughts and would like to be proven wrong on some of them because at the moment I don't think archery will be a viable skill in pvp.

But how do you want to hit a skilled player without soft lock? Good players are always moving fast and playing a dynamic combat style. A manual cross with time to power up the shot will be an issue, or what's your opinion on that? Not talking about PvE and first person, that seems to work, just remembering the E3 gameplay. But in 3rd person in PvP? Hm.
