I bought a new jacket as I've always wanted to put patches on one. But I have no experience working with patches. Does anyone here have experience using them? Are glue on ones preferable to sewn on? What's the deal with Velcro patches? Does anyone know of a good website to order patches? I see scifigeek.com carries a lot of patches. As for what I'm planning on doing is a Fallout themed jacket.

Glue-ons. After gluing them on, sew along the edge for maximum hold.

Is sewing absolutely necessary as I don't have a sewing machine. Would hand sewing be OK?
