Smartphone accessories rant

Post » Wed Jan 15, 2014 10:58 am

It annoys me to no end that most of the off-the-shelf accessories for smartphones and tablet computers (eg. speaker docks, bluetooth keyboards) are designed (or at least labelled as such) for Apple iCrap. It's like third-party accessory manufacturers want to pretend Windows and Android phones and tablets don't exist. I just bought a bluetooth keyboard that said "for iPad" on the box, but I'm using it right now to type this post on my Android smartphone. (The phone handset even fits inside the tablet mounting bracket. :D)

It doesn't even make sense from a business standpoint: why would you alienate everyone who doesn't buy Apple, when you could make USB/BT accessories for Windows/Android fans and rake in the dough? I'm going to take this "I'm designed for IPAAAAAAD" keyboard home and see if it works with my laptop's Bluetooth dongle and my PS3. Never bought Apple products, never will. If you want to know why, ask the fine people at Cracked.

Apple products tend to be more expensive. So perhaps they can justify charging more for their product if it fits a more expensive product to begin with.

Two things to blame:

1. Apple's refusal to use a standardized port connector. Devices that target Apple devices want to make it clear it'll work with Apple devices because it's more expensive for them to support Apple products than others (this obviously doesn't apply to bluetooth devices).

2. You not searching hard enough. I just bought http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Slim-Wireless-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Tablets/dp/B00BKW2410 for my Nexus 10. In part because the company made the effort to not just throw the iPad label, but also include other devices.

But my keyboard only cost A$30. Doesn't really fit that theory...
