The Elder Scrolls "Light"

Post » Thu Jan 16, 2014 9:06 pm

So if you've played "Kingdoms Of Amalur" you might think it's a fair description to label it "The Elder Scrolls: "Light"".

There's an impressive depth of lore, and impressively large map, tons of content, gear, weapons and spells...

But while the patient gamer can take the time to bathe and wallow in this depth, it's equally possible to pick it up and get straight to bashing things and people.

Do you think TESO is going to be more like "Kingdoms Of Amalur" or do you think it's going to be more like previous "Elder Scrolls" games?

I know this isn't "TES VI" but you know what I mean.

What do you guys think?

Oh god I hope not. KoA was like a single-player WoW. It was like someone ate a rainbow and puked it all over everything.

No, they are very unsimilar IMO.

ESO is TES light, but not THAT light.

Actually, I think that is a very fair way to describe ESO, I approve of this comparison.

I think KoA is still a single-player game. And I think the differences between TES single player games and ESO are ALL derived from the fact that ESO is an MMO. So it is not a valid anology.

The gameworld in ESO is the SAME as the single-player games... or at least, as similar to them as they are to each other. The lore is the SAME. Those things are not "lighter".

ESO is also different from the SP games, but entirely in ways which directly reflect the fact that there are other players in the world with you... for instance, the fact that there's no monster scaling (which is what allows for the SP games to be more "open world", in that you will find enemies of the right level wherever you go). Or the fact that there's PvP. Or the fact that there's a limit to the extent to which your decisions can change the world.

The fact that KoA and ESO have very different graphical styles is kinda irrelevant to the question, btw :P

Have you played KOA?

Do you understand what I'm asking?

I don't really disagree with anything you've said it's just not the stuff I'm worried about when it comes to TESO.

yes ESO is an MMO set in the TES setting, From that I have seen from the game it looks a lot like Skyrim, perhaps more like Oblivion.

We will see stuff we have never seen before like Altmer architecture, as its an tropical island populated by elves with lots of magic I expect it to look more colorful than Skyrim. the daggerfall areas probably have updated grapic from Daggerfall too.

Except this the game has the MMO restrictions, no level scaling, the areas are larger to compensate, less freedom you can not kill shopkeepers and loot them or drop 1000 watermellons in the street.

Yes, I've played KoA :) I think it's a pretty decent large open-world single-player RPG. But like you said, it doesn't really have the "heft" that the SP TES games have. I agree with you about that. I didn't find it very involving.

ESO is different from the SP TES games, but not the same way KoA is different. I don't think it's "lite". It's an MMO, and the differences follow from that :P
