Question regarding skill points

Post » Thu Jan 16, 2014 10:59 pm

Hi, does anyone know what the limitations are to gaining skill points. I'm keen to know if it is possible to unlock/max every skill in the long-run so early game choices don't lead to later regrets. Do you know if you can eventually have access to all the class abilities or will we only have enough skill points to max 1 skill line in a class.

They have stated that it is not possible to max out all skills, so you need to make a choice. In the interview, it did suggest that you get access to an awful lot of them. I don't know exactly how many, including with all skyshard discoveries, however.

I would just behave as I do in all new MMOs: just get what seems best at the time and don't worry about coherence or optimal spending. You won't fully understand the game until sometime after level cap anyway, and can always change then.

Well in that case I hope they introduce something like they have in Path of Exile called regret points which let you backtrack and re-skill a limited number of skill points. I find it's rather annoying having to make such decisions without late game exploration. I wonder if anyone has a rough estimate as to how many skill points will be available, I mean will I be able to max only 1 skill line in a class or maybe 2?

You could max several, but there are quite a few skill lines in the game (to my mind, apparently not in the estimation of ES players). You have three class skills lines, three armour skill lines, six for weapons, one for race, one for fighters' guild, one for mages' guild at least. That's what I noted from ZOS, there may be others too that I don't know about yet.

Well considering you only really need 1 line maxed in skills like armour and weapon, I would have guessed it would leave enough for at least 2 maxed class-related skill lines. I think this is fairly important information they need to announce formally.

That's good news, would still be nice to know the cap on skill points, I mean it's mainly for the purpose of multi weapon setups with diversified combat skill play which would involved a variety of different class skills.

They won't really need to. The NDA will be lifted by launch and then the internet will be awash with this information from the long term beta testers who have all this basic information.

"Will it be possible, thanks to level-ups, Skyshards, Alliance Ranks, and special quests, to gain enough skill points to acquire ALL the possible abilities for a given class and race?

With a game that will grow and change as much as ESO will, this is a tough question to answer! At launch, you won’t be able to max out every skill with the number of points available. However, we’ll be adding more skills and skill points, so it will be fluid. You might not be able to max out everything at once, but you might be able to have all but the class and racial skills, for example, completely unlocked at different times with a single character."

I hope that answers your question :)

Something else to consider is that abilities can be morphed. Morphing an ability costs a skill point, so they have to factor morphing into their total skill point budget. If you choose not to morph an ability, then you can use that skill point on something else.
