ESO Tools and an Eve-like API

Post » Fri Jan 17, 2014 9:06 am

I sent a question to the devs asking if there would be an Eve-online style API to allow us to make smarter applications and fansites related to the game.

For those of you who don't know what I mean by eve-style API or how it would benefit you - it means a way for fan applications/sites to look at some real data from your account to provide better features. You would have an access key you could sign into the fan app with and that app would then be able to monitor certain things on your character - for example to automatically export character data to use in a talent calculator or killboard or to monitor your 'wallet' so the app could automatically detect when somebody has transferred money to pay for a service

If anyone is interested in seeing exactly the kind of features/tools that you could end up with and just how useful an api like this can be - take a look at the number 1 eve tool 'evemon' - http://evemon.battleclinic.com/

Here's what they said back:

- They couldn't tell me whether there would be an API yet because of the NDA

- That meant they also couldn't offer developer access to any system for add-ons or an API (which means most apps won't be launched until after the game)

- The guy who responded said he personally used and loved the EVE API so would love to see it

- That I should voice the idea here so the community can support it

The last one is the important one, it makes me think that the developers are going to pay attention to these boards when it comes to implementing future content. So how do you feel about this?

Yes please. When I signed up to a corp in Eve online, they asked for my api key so they could monitor my progress with my skills and finances.

Although I don't really feel the need to monitor how much cash I have in TESO. It would be excellent for an armory type of program. Automatically importing your armour and stats, allowing you to make practice modifications before finalizing them in game.

I doubt I would ever use it, as I try to ignore any data or services outside MMOs, I just want to play the game and not have something monitoring my actions. But as something optional for people who want that extra information, sure.

EDIT - I couldn't vote in the pole, as there is no option for saying Yes, I'm not interested myself but as an option for other players why not?
