This man was very interesting. Too bad he passed away. He was quite the gem of World War II if you ask me, even if his name isn't as popular as the likes of powerhouses like Churchill, Himmler or Patton. Such dedication for your country is quite astounding, and not something you'd see too much today. Some may call him stubborn, but there's something to be said for a man like this.

If there had not been the killings that were attributed to him, I would feel differently. Of course he was never brought to trial, so those are just accusations.

There was an American Soldier who lived under similar circumstances on Arundel Island. I read of him back in the 70's, but I can't find any web references. He was known as the Wolfman of Arundel Island, and he spent many years after the war living on the island. It may have been a different nearby island that he was on, as Arundel was a major battle island where the Japanese were ousted.
