whats the lore behind skyshards? were they in older elder scrolls games? cuz i didnt see them in oblivion or skyrim. im not asking this cuz im opposed to them or anything like that im just curious as to how they got into the eso universe. or the whole elder scrolls universe altogether.

They're new. I believe there's some kind of in-game rationale related to Molag Bal's attempted grab for Nirn, but I don't know the details.

Remember that every ES game adds something new to the mix. For instance, the "Mundus Stones" of Skyrim had a function that previously was associated with the constellation you were born under. And while the constellations stayed in the game, suddenly they were about skills And of course the whole "word wall/dragon shout" thing was invented entirely for that game.

Ayleid's Welkynd Stones from my understand are parts of "space rocks" that fall from the sky and were collected and mode by that race to hold magicika power. I wonder if Skyshards are something close to this idea also. May be in more of a raw form of it?

No idea about the lore behind them, not sure if there is any, I thought they were there to encourage exploration and offer more skill points.

Every item or idea in the game have to have in game lore reason, otherwise it is stupid and silly. If no lore can explain it, they it just need to be thrown out. Lore is the trump card!

I don't think I can say anything without breaking the NDA, but a lore reason for skyshards is given almost right off the bat. They're supposed to be shards of aetherial power that connect your soulless husk of a body to nirn. So there is a lore reason, the prophet goes more in depth about them.

Value them greatly, as they are needed for extra skill points to obtain abilities or morph an acquired one.

No idea, couldn't tell you even if I knew (NDA) but I can tell you I haven't heard any lore behind skyshards yet.
