How do you pick up an item and manipulate it in the game world without adding it into your inventory? I can pick up and drop items, but they tend to fly everywhere when I do so. I've seen a gameplay video where somebody was carrying an item around in front of them so they could place it exactly where they wanted to. How do I do that?

If on console,

Xbox: hold "A"

PS3: hold "X"

Hold the use button (E on PC, X on PS3, A on Xbox)

Another tip: just drop anything you want to place and leave the cell (house) before you try to place it. Otherwise it will not stay put. Place it where you like after re-entering and it should be okay.
