What's the point of MMOs ?

Really I ask you this question, because I don't see what is supposed to be the good thing that draws people to MMOs.

I tried to get into a variety of MMOs but I just couldn't.

First of all,let me tell you that watching people bunny hoping all around and talking about unrelated things in the game just breaks the immersion for me,so I really can't think there are people who would enjoy watching other people spoiling their game like that.

I would thought that it's playing multiplayer with your friends, and doing co operative missions,or competitive deathmatch (pvp as they like to call it) like gameplay.

But these things are so simple that a player could host a session to his own computer for a match with up to 64 players,or even better the game could use dedicated servers, and server clients could be made public for anyone interested to start his own server. Any way, when you go beyond the 64 player mark, even on an MMO,for simple mortals who don't own one of those hexacore $1000+ Intel i7 processors, the frame rate is going to turn in to a slide show, let alone that a player can't concentrate on fighting so many people at the same time,so going beyond that is overkill I think.

Technically it's absolutely possible to host smaller matches though. What's the reason for keeping player's saves on a corporation's server then, other than DRM ?

It seems to me that what MMOs actually are,are games that their online functions have been locked down on purpose for the arbitrary reason of forcing always online DRM to players, with minimal if at any value for the players.

Please discuss, and let me know if there is a good reason for locking down a game's content to require authentication from a company server every second you play it,other than forcing this kind of always online DRM.

I don′t get it either to be honest. I′ve never had any desire to play with hundreds of other people, I′m single player only.

I don't really have a problem with multiplayer in general,I just think that what MMO eventually seems to be is a DRM service.

It's having your save files being kept by some business,in order to force you to connect to their servers each time you want to play the game.

At the same time your saves could be saved locally on your system, and you could use your own computer as a server by hosting your own session and inviting your friends,in case you want co-op or pvp.

I haven't been playing MMOs but there's one thing which has drag my interest towards TESO. The possibility of roleplaying with PCs instead of NPCs. The AI can never bring up as good and deep roleplays and stories as players could together. Think about it - you are not forced to stick with already written dialogues but you can freely ask and discuss with other characters. Share stories when sitting around a camp fire, ask road from unknown character, track down a thief who stole something from you, after a battle go searching the field covered with hundreds of bodies if you friend is there or if he has survived. I believe the thing which makes MMOs so popular is the depth of roleplay you could have with them, the depth of characters, stories, dialogue, diplomatic, politics and cooperation.
