How does tanking work?

Post » Tue Feb 11, 2014 10:44 pm

I seem to recall that it's not based on aggro like traditional MMOs. But clearly the game still has 3 archetypes (tank heal dps) as indicated by the roles in the alliance/group menu. So how does that work? The tank is still expected to hold aggro. But the Dragon Knight has no taunt skills... I'm confuzzled.

Sword and shield line does. Pretty sure the intent was to keep classes flexible, so role is more dictated by the gear and weapon set you are using rather than class.

Ah, makes sense. So there's just one skill 'Puncture' that holds aggro for 15 seconds, and it's single target. But in ESO dungeons you pull several at once, so I still don't think that's an effective way to hold aggro.

Also note the large number of stuns/incapacitates available to every class. It is only speculation at this point, but seems to me more than enough tools to control the fight.

Yup,

but the main point being, every group member needs to be able to fend for themselves. Tank wont hold 100% aggro on all mobs.

button smashing / faceroll in ESO PvE endgame is not a possibility.

and as much as press release videos showed some of the bosses were 100% resistant to CC.

Yeah I think for trash it would be more of a team agro effort, the taunt is for oh noes someones about to die situation. Maybe for boss fights it will be more tank agro dependant.

But the taunts don't work on Bosses? The one thing a tank needs to taunt?

I think its more based on damage as far as the boss goes, so tanking is more "you go first". It's so that things like two handed weapons can tank just as well, sword and shield has puncture because it does less damage but using a two hander you can stun the boss and then use a strong ability to get it's attention back. Also with big aoe attacks I'm assuming it's also not hard to keep the attention of 4 or 5 enemies at once.
