Ammunition.

I'm having trouble sourcing 5.56mm ammunition for the assault rifle. As soon as I get it its gone and I can only find a clips worth here and there. It's the most effective weapon in my load out for mid range combat at the moment so its my favourite. Moira Brown only has a small supply but only a couple of clips worth at any time. My lock pick skills aren't up to picking the lock on the Megaton armoury yet, I've not discovered much to date, so if you have any suggestions as to where I can lay my hands on a good supply would be very nice thank you. Also I've got around 250 rounds of 5mm ammo but no weapon to fit it to, so if you could illminate the noob I,d be be grateful. Thanks.

you can use the ammo press in the pit, it can convert any normal ammo in another sort of normal ammo.

If you talk to Lucas Simms and ask him about the area outside of Megaton you'll get a map marker for Rivet City. The weapons vendor there always has a lot of ammo in stock.
(If you haven't done much of the main quest it might be a good idea to avoid talking to the people in the science lab in Rivet City. I won't spoil it for you with the how or why.)
You also get a mapmarker for Tenpenny tower in the bar in Megaton I think. The vendors there also have plenty of ammo.

There are more vendors, but these two are probably the easiest to get to in the beginning. Unless you want to wait outside of Megaton for Lucky to show up.

There's also a Brotherhood Outcast fort southwest of Megaton, where you can turn in certain items for 5.56 ammo.

The 5mm ammo is for the minigun, which you will mostly find on supermutants. The minigun will go through 250 rounds in no time, so if you ever want to give it a go you'd best save up some more. :)

I dont know why the game refers it to clips. They are clearly ammo magazines. Yes, there is a very big difference.
