So I was reading the trending section of Facebook when I just read http://corvettemuseum.org/enews/backups/media/sinkhole.htm.
Is it me, or is there more stories of sinkholes popping up in recent years than before?

It's a conspiracy.
Sink holes are not a new phenomenon. They've been around for centuries. I remember growing up hearing reports of sink holes opening up. In fact there was one in my yard but it didn't amount to much more than a few feet. I'm sure there are sink holes that open every day but you only hear about the big ones that the conspiracy theorists and media sensationalize.
We are svcking so much water out of the ground, that yes, we are getting more Sinkholes. I grew up in Florida, where sinkholes are common, and only heard about these things once in a while.
Coverage has changed more than the sinkholes have. Partly that's just the basic all seeing internet effect, and partly it's because more sinkhole country has been built out. A sinkhole that swallows a condo or a corvette gets coverage that a few disappearing cypress trees wouldn't.
