POLL - Controls

Post » Fri Feb 14, 2014 11:57 am

Personally I think the controls are fine, but what are your thoughts?

I bring this up as I know one individual struggles a little with some titles and finds control complicated. I would only suggest reviewing this if there are many who find it awkward, in the event it opens up a wider market and encourages newcomers more.

PS. Utterly brilliant - a view shared by many ;)

The PC controls are fine, but for anybody who doesn't like em, you can of course remap them.

And they are not going to be rethought at this point, heh.

What I'm sure they ARE still working on is the two console ports.

Forgive me, i'm not sure what you are getting at. I know I can map the controls to whatever mouse button/key i want and have done so for some of the things I use more than others.

You're probably right - not sure if there's mouse wheel selection functionality though. For some people it seems more than half a dozen keyboard buttons is too many lol

I have 3 of the 5 on my trackball and the armor one on shift, I run with 'x'. it's a Stalker thing. I am getting this to work pretty well but I may try some other combos next time.

Default controls are pretty crap, and although you can change the keybindings, alt/ctrl/shift modifiers aren't possible because this isn't 2014 or anything.

In MMOs if you nee dto play longer the only option is to use mouse with additional buttons and define controls on your own way, the defaults are just for tutorial.

Sure they are. My keys are asdLeftAlt, as they have been since Doom, I dunno where this wasd nonsense came from. No problem doing that and as I said I hung one of the 5 on shift.

This whole resource based power is interesting. You can hammer down a medium price medium hit thing for a long time once you get some resources. And with the two pools, magica and stamina you can go on ... and on for a long time without stopping your attacks.

I might map interupt to an key, however I will probably get an naga mouse or something similar and have all combat moves on the mouse.

Might also map one mouse key as optional run so I can drink coffee while moving.

Other. I'll rebind 1-5 to my mouse thumb buttons and save some bigger macros for my G keys.

I'd make it possible to bind the mousewheel's up-down functions to the actionbar. Currently it's not possible...I think (?).

They seem fine but I'll need to map them better to my liking.

I have yet to try macroing my initial rotation. with the combat model in place the entire 5 step rotation could go off in less than a second.

I've always used the right side of my keyboard, and have remapped the keys as usual...

There are different kinds of control so I can see some having problem with one type than the other. As for keymapping, I had to change a things to keep myself from having to stretch my fingers around to reach some buttons so in that regard, you can just remap the keys to your fitting. Now there's also intuitivity, is the interface responsive? Are the buttons placed in a good way? do you have to dart your eyes around too much? That kind of stuff is just as important. And I can't really say anything about it because of NDA but I can say that the standard UI could use some improvements. Key responsiveness is also important, does the game reply to your keypresses as they should or is the timing off? This is what some people would call lose or tight controls.

It's not all about the keymapping

Other. The only thing I can't cope with is the wheel arrangement for the quickslot. I'd like to see keys 7-9 (they're not used, are they?) for health, magicka and stamina items. I actually chaned the Q key to 7 because I kept accidentally using potions in combat, and 7 is my twitch number for healing :) I also moved Ultimate from R to T for the same reason, I kept triggering it by accident.

Everything else is just about OK for me now. I found some things a bit awkward at first, but part of learning a new game is adjusting to any new controls.

Maybe it was just me, but I didn't seem to be able to bind to SHIFT+key... Did I do it wrong?

The remapping in the game is pretty open. You can remap almost anything. On the flip side, there doesn't seem to any modifier mapping. Maybe they feel it isn't necessary with so few abilities to use.

I'd really like to see the options for alt/ctrl/shift modifiers.
