The Rock Thread

Post » Fri Feb 14, 2014 2:49 pm

This thread is for discussion of EVERYTHING that is Rock. Classic Rock, Country/Southern Rock, Rock N Roll, etc... Whatever! As long it is some sort of rock music, it is accepted and can be talked about here.

I also will allow some talk of metal since sometimes metal can be confused as rock plus they are similar really. (I honestly believed that Gun's N' Roses and Led Zeppelin were rock... They count as metal though). But please stick to the primary target more so which is ROCK music!

So... Do you wanna rock?

~Favorite Rock Musicians/Bands of Mine~

Spoiler
The Beatles
AC/DC
Genesis
PrinceWhateverer
P1K
Green Day (I think Green Day is rock).
Bon Jovi
etc

I agree with your listing of The Beatles. I can only assume that people who say they are overrated have only listened to their pre-'65 stuff because Rubber Soul onwards pretty much everything is spectacular. My favourite band second only to Pink Floyd (and in quite a few regards I consider them better than the Floyd).

If you haven't listened to them yet check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4gLJZBEa8Q, really good band. I'd link more of their songs but I can't find any non-live ones on youtube.

What genre of rock do you find yourself listening to most? For me it has to be progressive rock, bands like The Alan Parsons Project, Yes, Pink Floyd etc.

Love rock. Any kind. Stadium, prog, swamp, hard, psychedelic, etc.

It is very hard to pick a favorite, but I think I would have to go with Blue Oyster Cult. Props to Black Sabbath, Nazareth, Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Kansas for being right up there with them, though.

Oh, and mad props to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

A very underappreciated band, Supertramp.

I know some of them are borderline metal/classic rock, but eh, whatever. I like the classic stuff, the stuff that's more attuned to metal anyways.

Mostly Classic Rock. Don't like many newer rock musicians/bands (From 2000+). I think I can name a few rock songs and musicians I like that are newer...

Most of the newer stuff I like are from the brony fanbase though (Like PrinceWhateverer). I mean, I don't care if you are a brony or not; you can't tell me that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7osvxvxpHc or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc-YMUWvA1s are horrible rock songs... That and he did an amazingly rock cover of Owl City's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxr4Aji2YN8 song. (I think it is a rock cover, correct me if I'm wrong here).

Oh and The Beatles are like my favorite band. Not a single song by them I hate/dislike... Plus, I don't mind if you hate them or not... But at least respect that they are a HUGE contribute to the world of music and all... That they will never be forgotten and always be loved until the end of the world.

Really? Bleh. If you said that specifically to the second song then I know for sure you dislike my favorite song ever for sure as well... (The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes").

I can hear the similarities, I guess the ponies just make me take it a lot less seriously. They don't sound similar enough though that disliking one makes you dislike the other. The second song, I don't know it just sounds like a generic song (I've noticed these days there are a lot of males with an acoustic guitar singing with a nasally voice).

Ah. Understandable though honestly, the songs are barely pony-related... Like with "Guardians", they never once mention anything about ponies... Just a character's name which can be muted off easily without ruining the song at all. (Heck, I used "Guardians" as battle music at times since without the video, you can't even tell that he gotten the idea from MLP).

And the other song (Which is similar to "Behind Blue Eyes") only has the word 'mare' in it, that's it... Though I could easily ask him to make a version of that song to replace "mare" with a human word so it isn't pony related. Heck, might actually succeed!

Is Oasis classic rock? Sounds like rock to me. Anyway I'm a big fan.

And Noel > Beady Eye!

It's kinda bad that I read the topic title, taking a different meaning for the word 'rock', and my first thought was "They're minerals Marie! Jesus!"

Tbh, I haven't listened to them on an album-by-album basis, I just have a compilation album that has about 50-odd songs on it. Though that's how I started with the Beatles so I'll probably get around to it eventually.

In general I think their albums aren't all that great, at least compared to how good their singles are.

It really helps to know and understand their history and how they came to be the band they are. Syd's mental instability and excessive use of chemical substances didn't only have detrimental effects on his ability to maintain his status in the band, but also helped to provide the rest of the band with a nearly endless supply of material for them to draw from for practically their entire career in music.

Certainly, Floyd isn't for everyoe, but a little knowledge of who they are, and how they came to be, can really help one appreciate them a bit more...even if you still don't enjoy their music.

Damn, quoted the wrong person

I'm not sure who you were quoting, but I've read a lot about Pink Floyd and Barrett. A very interesting history, but also very sad.

Yeah, I kind of need to pay a bit more attention there. After rereading your posts, and a few others, I now understand what I failed to thoroughly read through the first time.
