Numerous things to laugh about. One, the WSJ talking about birds being scorched. MAYBE...if they happen to fly right near the collecting tower I suppose. But the actual mirrors are just flat, so they aren't individually concentrating solar energy into some sort of 'death ray'. Two, the AP reporting that the 'local protected tortoises had to be relocated during construction'. That desert is all tortoise turf, and they get relocated any time anyone builds anything, so they don't get mashed by construction equipment. After their long slow march home they are probably all lying contentedly in the newly provided shade.
This is a good observation...at 5.5 square miles the thing is obviously huge...until you look at the picture and recognize there is nothing but flat scrubby desert for between ten and a hundred miles in any direction from there. They could pave that entire valley with mirrors and not really impact anyone or anything. Even those scruffy desert plants will thrive in the early morning late afternoon sun they will still get, without having to suffer through the direct mid day scorching they normally receive.
