PC Gamer 1st Impressions on Beta

Post » Fri Feb 14, 2014 2:45 pm

Regardless of the bad review from PC Gamer on the video, scroll down to the comments, They ALL are positive about the game.

ZENIMAX!!!!!!!!!!! Im patient for the bug-fixing, we all know its better to have everything working than the game being pretty, but Don't Forget to polish Combat (Movement and Sound), all the bad reviews ( Angry Joe and etc) is due to combat.

Its a detail holding the game being successful in everyone's eyes!

My Blood Burns in anxiety and my Heart desires so much this game to become the most Badass of all time! GO ZOS!!! HUUHAAAAA!!!!!!

Found the comments most fun, seen that in many comments elsewhere, one group complains the game is an wow clone, other that its to like Skyrim.

This affect reviewers too.

Yeah Zaria, i can't agree more, tho, i think ZOS need to get the attention to polish the combat until release date, most of the negativity on the game is because of that.

I really don't think the combat animations are as bad as what people are making them out to be....

Reading between the lines of the negative reviewer's and various comment sections, all I see are people trying to find something wrong, for the sake of their ego or hidden agenda.

Fixating on the particulars like combat animations, sounds like an issue with personal expectations than some intrinsic problem. On top of that, fluidity in combat cannot, should not, be gauged during newb levels; that's silly.

I understand and respect your opinion, but I dont agree when you say the fluidity combat on early lvls shouldnt be concerned, everyone knows that in most of the games (especially in rpg/mmos) the combat gets more complexity, and for that intense.

But the very first Hours of Gameplay, is crucial to grab ppls attention, more than half of my guild in GW2 that tested the beta this weekend (im talking about 90 ppl, its LUN from Sanctum of Rall server), got bored initially because of the "out-dated" combat model movements... its seems an unfinished work, dont get me wrong, i like the skill lines, the system and the mechanics, but the art, need heavy work. If they do a 2014 model, im pretty sure ESO will be 100% sucess.

The problem with the combat is all down to being able to walk through the enemy which is down to collision detection lacking in the game. If they fixed this then the combat would feel more real and have more weight behind it. Even Angry Joe mentions this in his review and also another reviewer. The problem for ZOS on this issue is that their game engine doesn't support it so we will never see it in the game unless they do rolling live updates like CCP does with Eve Online.

As for PC Gamer I don't listen to what they have to say about games anymore, none of their reports are consistent with previous ones. One moment they are praising a new game and then the next one you read they are pulling it to bits, maybe this is because the same reporter doesn't do all the reports from preview to review and so what we see is conflicting interests from the reporters who work for the magazine.

I think a lot of the problems the reporters had when reviewing the game was they expected a MMO like WoW and after so long being lead by the hand to quest objectives and not having to read the quest text they got the wrong impressions to the game. I admit it took me a while to figure it out at some time around level 8 I stopped playing for a few hours and had a rethink on the game. It was then I decided to forget about chasing quest waypoints and just explore the world like I do in the single player games, it was then the game really opened up for me and it all clicked into place about what it was about.

I think ZOS has done a good job on converting a single player game world to MMO status, sure we have lost some of that single player magic in small ways such as spell crafting and enchanting our own effects multiple times to a piece of equipment. But over all I feel the only thing they need to do now is to fix the bugs and make some of the quest location instances private, and the public dungeons much much bigger than what they are at present.

Yea, the combat animations were great. The problem was more with player movement and running/walking animations. Although, creatures and enemies has great animations I thought.

I have only played ranged but as I understand the melee complain is that the fighting lack impact. Part of this might be that enemy don't react on getting hit unlike Skyrim.

part might be character animation. The impact part will be hard in an MMO, as an chance of stagger has to be calculated on server and sent back to you and target.

This is not so noticeable in an tab targeted game, but combat in ESO feels more action oriented so you expect it.

So i'm not sure its an animation issue.

It's PC gamer. Once the zenimax marketers cross their palms with advertising silver they'll be singing a new song. Meanwhile that review was so obviously tied to the idiosyncratic expectations of the reviewers it won't affect anything. Especially as the two clowns were living, breathing examples of anti-charisma.

There are plenty of informative reviews around. People thinking about buying an expensive game box just to try it won't just be taking the word of a couple of clowns.

The reason why the graphics seem dated is for the PVP content, which this game takes great emphasis on capturing. Seeing thousands of players on map is no small feat to accomplish and maintain good quality of service..... so yea there is good reason why the graphics look 'dated' in parts, its to accommodate smooth play during these large events.

On my R9 290 card, I found the visuals to be overall, very good; lighting in particular.

Collision detection during large PVP encounters bog servers and network traffic a lot; especially when you have a few thousand on one map.

If you played Warhammer Online, you would understand what I mean - at Rank 40 It was an absolute nightmare during large scale sieges; you couldn't move around all in rooms clustered with players, some odd lag effects complicating things and the graphic lag was horrendous.

I like the idea of collision detection, don't get me wrong. If i have to choose between a lot better performance vs collision detection (especially in AvA) I will choose performance.

IMO they just have to polish a little bite the combat animations and make this a little more fluid... This review / first impression / whatever is ridiculous. This guy dont even know how to play his class, it seems like some else played until lvl 8 for him, so he could do his review...

But I really think the combat animations still need some polish...

I have not seen that video, thanks for linking... that combat looks much more fun and intense than what has been shown for all of the early game. I'm now re-sold on this game... very excited to get to play this!

The graphics are phenomenal.
