Staves - weapon damage or magic damage?

Post » Sun Feb 16, 2014 8:05 pm

Stamina affects weapon damage and magicka magic damage.

Weapon abilities use stamina, except for staves which use magicka.

So does anyone know if staff attack damage (as in left mouse button click) is affected by the weapon damage or magic damage attribute?

It would seem slightly counter-intuitive to me to have staff abilities boosted by magicka but their attacks by stamina.

The staff drains magic and all the associated active 'staff abilities' use magic too. Weapons, other than staffs, use stamina as their power. There are useful combos that use both magic and stamina, a Sorcerer with dual wield for example.

This is useful:

I know this is quite off-topic, but...

Does anyone else miss the old TES way of handling staves as weapons?

I mean, the good old D&D inspired; Staff is a physical weapon, no more. If it's enchanted, it might have magical properties, but otherwise it's just a stick for beating things up. These days, in more than half of the RPG genre (i bet), staves have become magical pew-pew-sticks. Oblivion started this trend in the TES series. Don't get me wrong, I am more than fine with staves being used as catalysts or such for casting, but a quarterstaff was actually a useful weapon, and would be so (and is so, clearly stated in lore) in the TES-universe.

True, we can talk about no polearms (Halberds and Spears existed in majority of the TES-series) , but that is just developer laziness.

PS. I am not hating, I am questioning. It is very healthy to question things. And I am looking forward to ESO... A Lot.

Are you sure about that? Because I played in the beta and I'm fairly certain that's wrong. See below.

Left clicking activates your basic melee attack, while holding the left mouse button charges a power attack. Power attacks do not cost Stamina to use, however they are slower to execute.

Not meaning to sound ungrateful but unfortunately that isn't useful in relation to the question I asked, which is about staff weapon attack power, not skills.

I don't hate the current implementation either but I know what you mean.

Once upon a time we casters relied almost wholly on spells. The staff was mostly there to say "I'm a mage!" and as a trusty fallback should you run out of mana.

Part status symbol, part security blanket.

In TESO's case, if the target is up close you'll bop them with the staff instead of firing bolts/beams at them.

@all in topic

Info from http://esohead.com/skills?line=34 it seems staff skills do use stamina instead of magicka. I have not used staffs ingame yet so I cant say if this is true.

this is then contradicting previous link to http://eldersouls.com/elder-scrolls-online/skills, I have also other sites stating it uses magicka.

How were it in last beta? There is a possibility they changed it to stamina, would be very unbalanced seeing other weapon skills use stamina.

The enchantment charge on a staff works the same way as on other weapons: it causes some effect (usually damage) each time you hit a target with it. Using the staff to block or bash requires stamina, much like doing so with any other weapon. The spell-powers linked to the staff use magicka. (Maybe there was something in there somewhere that didn't, but all of the lower-tier ones did.)

If your staff has added bonuses (i.e. +x damage from enchantments), these drain the charges. If you run out of charges, the bonuses won't apply until you recharge the staff.
