Crafting points?

Post » Sun Feb 16, 2014 7:34 pm

One thing I wondered about when playing the beta was how players were supposed to specialise in just one crafting profession as I had read about in an earlier interview but I saw nothing of this kind. However in this beta review from http://www.elitemonster.com/features/elder-scrolls-online-crafting-encourages-experimentation-key-gearing-end-game/ they talk about having a finite number of crafting points that can be distributed. I did not see this at all and I did quite a bit of crafting.

Did I miss something totally, or does it only apply at higher crafting levels or what?

I think that's older stuff. Currently you distribute points to crafting skills the say way you would to any skill.

Yeah that's skill points. That article specifically said "crafting points" and I thought it must be old information too but it was only posted on the 7th Feb. The devs did say that you would only truly be able to master 1 or 2 crafting lines on a single character but I just didn't see how that was implemented during my beta playtest.

You can basically craft anything as long as you have the materials for it in the beginning. Then you hit a wall when you have to start spending skill points in order to craft higher items. I think right there it will funnel certain people into looking to craft specific items.

Of course there is also research. Research is basically taking an item that has an attribute on it and "destroying" it at a crafting table thereby learning its attribute. Once you know the attribute and have the appropriate stone you can attach that attribute to a piece of armor.

Also, there is armor sets. Some special crafting areas. I found three of these areas where you can craft armor sets/weapons with a special ability if you are wearing three of the same thing. For example, one armor set would periodically breath fire...one was better at stealth I think. However, in order to craft these sets you need to know at least 2 attributes for each armor piece.

So lets say you have researched two restoration staffs with two attributes then you could be able to craft a restoration staff with the armor set ability in it.

The "only two crafting skills" restriction was dropped, you can now invest in as many crafting skills as you like.

It changed in November last year but they didn't publicise that fact very much. I've found only one instance of it being reported officially.

The current system allows anyone to max all craft skills. But now crafts use the same skill points as combat skill lines. Each craft requires you to spend points to raise the level cap of what you can craft, plus there are other non-essential crafting benefits you can buy with skill points.

Yeah and I am glad they changed it, but still makes you consider some choices when leveling. It seems natural someone that is also interested in improving their combat skills will not initially be diving into every crafting skill, because it would kind of gimp your character. So i'd imagine (at least for awhile) that most people will be able to craft a few things well connected to their normal gear, but later once there are long-term players there will be crafting masters. Still, I imagine it is going to take quite awhile.

Ahh I see, thanks for the clarification guys! And yeah I think the skill points are enough to warrant the restriction. I found very quickly that I wanted more points and there's no way I'd do more than a couple of crafting lines on any single char.

It is in the sense that you go out and gather stuff and then craft it, but it's a LOT more involed and the power is scaled to fit in with an MMO so you wont be about to make yourself super overpowered like you could in the single player games.

Absolutely. The crafting system is fantastic..particularly as this is what we will roughly get at launch? Pretty impressive. I was bummed about there not being an Auction House for awhile, but I feel it will make crafting more relevant and prevent people from running around killing stuff to earn gold then buying all the mats on the AH and BAM master blacksmith.

Sort of a slick way to get people to come together more....advertise selling in zone of their mats, join guilds in order to obtain materials, etc.
