Does fishing have a purpose other than achievements?

Post » Mon Feb 17, 2014 5:40 am

I did a reasonable amount of fishing in the beta and got a couple of 'rare' fish and I noticed there were a bunch of achievements associated with fishing. However, I was hoping i could cook the fish I caught but didn't find any recipes that used them ad the fish were simply marked as a 'trophy' and did not state it could be used in crafting.

However, http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/games/1305469/elder-scrolls-online-review-hands-on-with-pve-beta says that fishing spots are required for cooking and alchemy. So is this just soemething that applies at certain levels or is the article author just making an incorrect assumption?

I hunted all over in boxes and crates looking for recipes to cook fish with and I never found anything (not to mention the trophy mark on the fish). I imagine they will add more to it later beyond achievements. I can't imagine we would all be out catching fish we couldn't eat.

You will get resources for cooking different recipes with it.

Some of the recipes are loot drop only and its just luck if you get it or not.

As far as I could find, fishing was only good for the achievements and a little bit of cash. I would absolutely love for fishing to provide alchemy and provisioning components, but I personally didn't receive any such thing.

Did you actually see this in the beta, or are you speculating?

I made it my mission to find a rare crafting book last beta, so I was searching endlessly for those. In the process, I found at least two or three fish recipes for provisioning.

Oddly enough I never found a fish recipe, but I found several crafting motifs (one in Coldharbor no less). None of the special crafting motifs though like Daedra, Dwemer, etc...

Never found a fish recipes, at least pre 6, and i am 100% i found ALL other recipes though.

The time spent to MAYBE catch a fish (big MAYBE) is just not worth it, that time could had been spent finding another chest.

That sound fishy, cos only "fish stuff" avaible in recipes right now are mudcrab meat

i just check in lets just say -more then 500 recipes.

i try fishing - but only fish i was able to catch counts as "bait" or as a "trophy" - no provisioning, no reagents (and "fish" alchemy reagents should be in this game)

Judging that in beta not even single recipe was avaible in some kind of store/stall/taveren its bit more then "some". Something closer to "all"

It was in the beta test that was focusing on crafting...

Good - at least one less wories, with some supply of basic (or even better) recipes. (i guess some recipes will be back on release)

Was some basic provisioning resources also avaible in shops? Cos in last beta i was desperate to get more of this "base filler" resource type (like Thin broth, meal, snake wine)

i was still able to level provisioning to 20 before i hit the wall with lack of resources ;D

Yes there was resources in the vendors too... But that might have been only to make it easier for us to test crafting. Who knows.

How did fishing work anyway? By the time I got bait I didn't remember all that the help box said few hours earlier and whenever I used any of the bait I had (3 types) at different spots nothing happened, so I just reeled it in and didn't try it again.

You could have several types of bait such as crawlers looters from things like spiders, guts from stuff like rats, inspect parts from butterflies and so on. Then you could choose your bait and then hit the E key or whatever it was. You wait a few moments until it 'bites' then hit the key again to reel in. I don't know if different kinds of bait work better in certain spots or something.

I know that, I did mention that I had several types of bait (including one bought from the vendor). ;)

What I was asking about how did the mechanic work - were you supposed to throw it in and wait, and randomly reel it in like I did, or was there a signal that the fish got caught and you should reel in? Like in FF XIV for example (in the early version).

I hope fishing has its uses just like any other gathering/crafting does.

I HATED that in FFXIV they went through all the trouble of having fishing with a ton of different baits, water types where only certain fish are found, etc and then the fishing really meant jack diddly compared to any other crafting profession or gathering.
