So, I'm a leatherworker...

Post » Mon Feb 17, 2014 8:36 am

Well, as the title suggests, I'm a leatherworker, and I draw a lot of inspiration from TES, especially when it comes to the sheaths and armor cuffs that I make. I figured you guys might want to check out some things that I've made!

This is one of my favorites, it's a sheath that I've made for a throwing knife, something I'd like to think somebody in the thieves guild or dark brotherhood would carry, I made it for a friend of mine as a commission for a cosplay.

and this one is one of my personal favorites

For some reason it wouldn't allow me to embed the photos?

If by embed you mean add directly as a photo to the forums; It can't be done. You can only link to images on these particular forums.

As for the actual topic now: Things like these are always nice to see! Moar please!

Nice to see different angles of the same thing. Have you done something bigger? Have you ever tried to replicate in-game items as well as possible?

I've made other belts and non-tes related items, but most of it is TES inspired. I'm thinking of making a replica sheath of some sort, here, soon, I just need a good item to base it off of. Preferably something from skyrim, considering how it has the most detail, although something from oblivion could work, too! I actually have experience making leather plate armor, through a process of boiling, that creates hardened leather. It's virtually impossibly to stab through, but it becomes impossibly brittle, so I don't do much work with it.

Very cool! And huzzah on meeting another leatherworker on the forums!

You have very nice stitching, very even, not too much tension on the thread it looks like. The colors are beautiful, even, and rich. Do you use a chrome-tanned or veg-tanned leather?

Very nice work.

Thanks Ysbal! I take pride in my stitching, I do it all by hand! I usually (and by usually , I mean 95% of the time) use veg tanned, and then tool and dye it myself. I feel funny working with chrome tanned leather, because it's usually a lot more floppy, and you can't tool/dye it. It's good for practice though! And woo, I didn't think I'd run into another leatherworker around here! +5 for you, man! Look up Ian Atkinson on youtube, he has an amazing video on dying leather, or a section of it in one of his videos, that really helped me. I love his work!

I've always been fascinated by Leather working and Metal working, so seeing some of these awesome works is a treat. I looked up that YouTube channel and he has some very informative videos.

Yeah, I tend to prefer veg-tan as well, it seems to hold up better. Chrome-tanned is decent for lining sometimes though. Tooling is great fun, isn't it? I love it, anyway.

Thanks for the name, I'd never heard of Ian Atkinson but will be sure to look him up. Always up for learning something new.

Do you ever wander around on leatherworker.net by any chance? Lots of new stuff to learn, pretties to see, and people to meet. Though, I tend to just lurk and look more than post.

It's great to see another leatherworker around here.
