named game saves

I found one of the most useful features of Morrowind was the ability to name your game saves. It was a feature I'd not seen in any game before and, strangely enough, it seems to have been dropped from later games. All the games I've played recently (Fallout & Elder Scrolls) just give you numbered saves. Even worse are games like Far Cry 3 and Tomb Raider which severely restrict both the number of saves and when you can save. If I've come to a major branch in the story line (like which side of the civil war to side with in Skyrim) I've had to write down the save number in case I want to go back and try the alternative storyline later.

The Morrowind system is so elegant that I can't understand why it was dropped. I've found it very useful when I've had more than one character on the go at once. I simply name the files with the character name and a number (typically I'll set up 1-10 and then reuse them, over-writing the oldest file each time.) It also lets you make a recognisable save at major decision points in the game, such as joining different factions etc. It lets you easily find that particular branch in the game play, if you want to see where the alternative takes you.

I'm currently replaying Morrowind after a long layoff and this has reminded me about this useful feature....

Why do you think Bethesda gave up on this facility? I can't see anything negative about this way of managing game saves.

I like the feature but at the same time it can get tedious typing a name for a new save, especially in my case where I make new saves instead of overwriting saves.
