Game Won't Let me Level Up

Post » Wed Feb 19, 2014 12:14 am

I started playing Morrowind again after a long time and after getting a new computer. I had backed up previous files from my old computer and transferred them to my new one, tried playing with the old files, but they wouldn't work. So I reinstalled the game and started afresh and when it was time to rest and raise my level, I received this message:

'Unable to complete operation due to failure removing previous file. Temp file remains. Continue running executable?'

And if I do continue, my character will be rested but not levelled up. Is there any way I can fix this?

Are you running any mods?

Where did you install Morrowind to?

Right click on your Morrowind EXE and run as administrator!

That might fix your problem!

No, I'm not using any mods and, if I understand correctly, all the files for Morrowind are in Local Disk (C:). For some reason, the game's data file still has my previous game from my old computer on it, so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it?

But I'll try the Administrator solution

EDIT: Sorry, I've also got Bloodmoon installed.

I've given it a try, but my save file isn't there if I open it as Administrator :/ Not that I was very far into the game, so I don't suppose I mind that too much. But is there any other way to solve the problem?

When I had Windows 7, I had to turn UAC off anytime I used a program that was in the default Program Files folder. Ever since I had Windows 8, I come to find (and even with UAC off) that W8 throws a fit for a lot of games installed in the Program Files folder. I installed all my games, third party programs like BOSS, mods, etc. into a folder that is outside my C drive. In my case, I have it installed into a custom folder I made in My Docs called Installed Games, never had an issue since. Try reinstalling outside of C into a different folder like in My Docs.

Sounds like a good idea, but how do I redirect it towards a new folder rather than C? It doesn't give me an option to send it to another folder during installation. Or do I just copy and paste all the files into the new folder after it's installed?

It looks like a corrupted autosave. Try disabling autosaves in Options, AND delete autosave files from Morrowind\Saves folder.

Sometimes the autosaves get corrupted and then the game has trouble overwriting them.

It doesn't give you a redirect option? That's odd. There should be a window that says "Choose your destination" and the Browse button is at the bottom-right of that window.

Nope, I've got no choice at all. It just says "Installing to: C:\Program Files" and "Start Menu Folder is: Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind". I don't know how to change that.

Ok, I'll give that a try.

You should see http://i.imgur.com/DrnkYrp.png when installing. Not sure why you are not given that option

You can just install to the default location, and then drag/drop your entire Bethesda forum wherever you want Morrowind to be.

Wouldn't that confuse the executable expecting its files to be where it was installed? I tried that once with a game and it got all wonky, but maybe Morrowind is different then.

I am wondering if the option is not there since technically you are reinstalling than installing brand new. Try uninstalling then install.

I did uninstall it completely then installed it again, but I tried Pluto's suggestion and my character seemed to be able to rest without a problem. But as you said, it did confuse the executable and I had to browse for the file.

Good to know your character won't turn into a Sixth House agent

Happy gaming :D
