Savegame suddenly getting huge

Post » Wed Feb 19, 2014 2:54 am

OK, I guess it is soon the time to start another game, as this one is beahving increasingly strange. Which is OK because I have some 160 mods, a couple of them pretty script-heavy as far as I can tell, so be it....

I just want to get a feel for the issue:

This game is at about 71 hours now. During the first 60 hours of the game, the size of the savegames increased steadily little-by-little from the inital what... 3.5 MB (don't remember) to some 8.7 MB. That all seemed pretty much normal, nothing unusual going on. I think 8.7 is rather small actually. Now over the last 10 - 11 hours, the game size has suddenly increased almost 3-fold to 25+ MB... it loads only badly, acts strangely in parts, getting laggy sometimes, Immersive Beds refusing to ever play the sleep animation again... the usual crap, slowly going down the drain I'm afraid.

Now I did not install any new mods during these last 10 hours.

The one (major?) thing I did though, in game, is buy a second horse in Riften. The first one was bought in Whiterun "long time ago". In that sequence i did: I rode to Riften, took care of some business. Then on departure bought the second horse from the Nord (was inside his shack when buyin), step outside, emptied the the saddlebags of the first horse (which was still perfectly alive), sent the first horse back to Whiterun, mounted the new horse, rode it 5 seconds, dismounted it, load some stuff into it, and since then ride around on the second horse. I'm using Kuertee Horse Commands to manage my horses.

The history of my savegames is not entirely complete. But one major spike in game size increase was after buying the new horse. The second spike occured when during the MQ Alduin's Wall I got involved fighting 3 dragons plus the entire Karthspire Foresworn camp in short order which probably overloaded Papyrus for good because there were also the two followers Esbern and Delphine and, and, and... Even the Nirnroot at the camp I could not collect anymore, wouldn't play the animation. Upon a reload of the game then, about 3 scripted events that were not played in the previous session still played delayed... probably all borked up for good.

Basically I have only 2 questions:

Could owning 2 horses at the same time be the root of all evil? I seriously doubt this is a problem. But maybe there is something like a known issue about it? Not buy another horse unless the old one dies?

The other question would be more for curiosity sake: what was the biggest savegame you ever got? And could keep playing it reasonably well?

I do not know if this can help You, but for My Save Bloating I installed an ini file into SKSE/Plugins with

[General]

ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

This is the method that many of Us who used SOS Civilisation used to prevent and stop Saved Game Bloat when We removed the Mod from Our Game. I want to say that Arthmoor found this, but I am going off of My memory.

LATE EDIT You may want to check the website where You downloaded the Saddlebag Mod from. I have not had a character that used Horses since I played with Mounted Combat using a free Horse I found in Winterhold at a Campsite.

It was a function publicly introduced by SKSE, and tested by Arthmoor by deliberately causing the infamous SOS bloatbomb (which is no longer an issue in the new versions for those who don't know the history of that fiasco) and then using the one-time console command version of that function.

I am curious as to what size save game is generally seen as acceptable or within limits. I run a pretty heavily modded game with scripted mods - just trying some stuff out before starting. My initial savegames after a few hours are about 7.5 MB. Starting at that size, am I looking for trouble?

I don't think anyone has arrived at a figure where it can be said "yep, that's too big, you're boned" yet. From strictly personal experience, I have one that's 22MB and isn't giving me any real trouble that can't be attributed to the usual problems of having too much going on.

Most of Xbox saves were around 10-15 past the 150/ish mark my current PC one is a little over 13 and my load times are starting to become frustrating.

The largest I have ever seen in my game is 24mb. They normally hang around 17 to 20 for me.
I only have a hand full of mods compared to most players (plus my own combat "major" overhaul mod) but they tend to be script heavy.
I personally do not believe script heavy mods are the main reason for large save games. But that is based on my experience not any facts.

FWIW
Save 5. 00.50hrs, 5.65MB
Save 1560. 318.25hrs, 17.65MB, Lvl64

Using ERSO suite + AFT(4 man squad) + SIC + others, 5F esp's in total.
Only very occasional exterior CTD's, which I put down to bad spawns & either I go in a different
direction or fast travel to nearest location that's past the affected area.
