Where did our signatures go and why?

Post » Wed Feb 19, 2014 12:03 pm

ok I am just really curious why did we suddenly erase the ability to have a image signature on the forums? its not like the signature was hurting anything? I have used my signature in online gaming for many MANY years and never had a problem before

On this forum, the auto show of pics in sig are disable. That just their rules -- shrugs.

What do you mean "suddenly?" We haven't allowed images in signatures for a long time.
They usually just add too much clutter to the threads, and some people would spam inappropriate images.

Yeah did I miss something? As long as I've been a member of these forums we weren't able to have any sigs outside of text or links.

I understand Mr. Pluto's concern, at the same time, I kinda want to add my Khajiit Lovers group and / or ESO guild Logo pics at part of my sig instead of just text links...

Good grief - the reason people often put rig specs in their signature on gaming and tech forums is so that if asking for tech help they don't have to type them out each time.

Once upon a time a group of asshats decided to get revenge on the admins/devs for creating moderators. Seriously. They did this by having a trolling spam party that will forever be remembered as "gay porm night". Its one of the reasons that any porm stuff is an instaban offense.

So basically an immature group of posters who wanted the freedom of acting however they wanted including flaming other posters using rather impolite language killed any hope of having images in sigs.

I keep information like that on notepad, and do a copy/paste when I need it. Works just as well as creating a sig with it.

I can't make an awesome signature so I don't care much but I do agree with the fact people would spam inappropriate pictures or say the male reproductive system...

We actually allowed them for about 2 days several years ago. It was not really something that was allowed, it was a feature on a software upgrade to the boards that was not disabled. The admins decided to let it happen just to see what would happen. There were so many images in the sigs the forums were unreadable as the text got lost in the pictures. So, that feature was removed. If you were not on the boards those two days, you would have missed it. Plus, a number of the pictures were rather inappropriate.

So, other than that brief experiment back in 06, we have never had pictures as part of the forums, either in signatures or in posts.

You can put that in your signature's now. Several members have the specs of their PC or system as part of their forum signatures.

And not to forget one of the most important issues images both in signatures and posts bring: huge stress and unnecessary load on the forum database and hard drives.

I do not see that way -- most pics are from a 3rd party hosting site and that site has to supply the bandwidth and HD space. The forum server just tells the local web browser where to pull the pics from.

True. But most forums who do allow pictures often have their own image collection with premade templates...it varies alot from site to site.

You can even put a link. I see no problem at all. Now the photo forums I belong too live on the pictures but this is a game forum.

You are starting to get crazy.

You have little idea about the game yet post all the time. Little idea about the forum which has been just like this across all the Bethesda forums for a long time. What are you trying to do here?

The NDA is only about 80% lifted. There are still things that some of us veteran testers are not allowed to speak about, only give impressions.
