Lack of pure "Warrior" class?

Post » Wed Feb 19, 2014 5:15 pm

Hey guys. First off let me start by saying that I've pre-ordered this game, I'm a long time ES fan, and play Skyrim daily. However there is one thing that bothers me about ESO, and it has right from my very first beta play, and that is the core classes. Mainly the Dragon Knight.

To me they seem to specialized, and one dimensional for a base class, leaving little room for creating a truly unique character. I was hoping that the base classes would be something like Warrior (or fighter/barbarian), Rogue (thief/scoundrel etc), Sorcerer (which is fine as is, only I would love to be able to specialize in fire or ice rather then just lightning), and I don't really have much complaints about the Templar.

If I wanted to make a purely martial character who doesn't rely on magic or dragon abilities or any of that jazz, I'm pretty much at a loss. How would I go about recreating my Orc Barbarian / Rogue from Skyrim? I don't care for the ability to shoot out a magical chain to grab my enemies?

IMO Dragon Knights should have been just a pure martial class such as a Fighter or Barbarian. They just seem too specialized to leave much room to be unique.

For anyone that plays D&D, it seem like the Dragon Knight would be a Pristige Class, that you start the game with.

Don't put any points into DK then. Invest everything into weapon and armor skills maybe.

Take any class... ignore class skill lines completely.

You can use a single action bar and use nothing but weapon skills, skipping all the class skills. You would sort of be gimping yourself, but think it would meet your criteria.

All Class abilities are "magic" to some extent. If you're looking for a purely non-magical character, I don't see anything stopping you from forgoing class abilities entirely in favour of weapon abilities.

The idea I think is that class abilities are the secret arts of each "order", hence why they are resticted on those classes. Stuff like swinging a weapon around are hardly secret arts, they fit much better as abilities available to anyone who cares to learn them.

I still think they could have done a warrior class with "seceret arts" that focused around martial combat. Possibly shouts, charges, weapon throws, rages, debuffing etc, with less an emphasis on magic.

Just use weapon/armor/guild skills instead of class skills. It may not be that great in pvp, but you will still be able to kill monsters just fine.

Go with the shadow skill line from Nightblade instead of Dragonknight. Use only the twohanded skill line and the armor skills and the undaunted skills. Use intimidate from the Fighter's guild and Persuade from the Mage Guild. Add in a dash of Thieves Guild skill line once it's released. Voila. Barbarian/Rogue.

The problem is there are only very few non-class abilities... I mean stand alone ones - you can get two types of attack and a CC from weapon(+buff or utility skill), and that is not enought to build a character.

I understand your complaint and I would like to see much more both skills and classes in ESO. Skills that can be considered as option.
