Who's currently playing Oblivion?

Post » Thu Feb 20, 2014 11:06 am

Just wondering who is currently playing Oblivion. I have only played for a couple weeks in the past six months or so, but even when I don't play, I still come here to discuss it. Honestly, I have moved on from TES entirely at the moment. I am sure I will play Oblivion again, and I still play Morrowind every month or two, but lately, I have become interested in other games. Something that only happened after I finally switched to PC, since the selection of open world PC games available is much greater than on console.

Lately I have been obsessed with Fallen Enchantress Elemental Heroes. It is interesting because it gives me the same feeling of exploration and roleplay that I had when I first started playing Oblivion. Fallen Enchantress is a different type of game, its more world building like Sid Meirr Civilization, but in a fantasy setting, complete with magic and monsters. It is open world and there are interactions with other factions. You can make treaties, trade, go to war, and they have a disposition toward you that is partially based on race and faction, but can change with the course of the game depending on your actions. Combat is based on a party and turn based.

Still, with all the differences, it is open world exploration and building an empire is somewhat like building up a strong character. So, I have the same type of exploration feeling I get with Oblivion. And the interactions with other factions, and to a lessor extent with the monsters, give me a good roleplaying experience (albiet somewhat different than the more personal roleplaying experience you get with Oblivion). Plus, you can customize your character in Fallen Enchantress just as much as you can in Oblivion, with ten races to choose from and a wide variety of starting abilities, etc.

How many of you are currently playing Oblivion? And if you are playing, what is keeping you interested after all these years (or are you a new player)? And if you are not playing, are you playing another game that gives you the same type of feeling that you got when you first played Oblivion?

I'm still playing Oblivion, partly because I'm writing a fanfic (or at least attempting to) over on another forum, and partly because new characters keep popping into my head.

That and there's a lot of things in the game I've not had a character do, or that I've not seen in years, and a lot of places I've never even seen.

Also, the game's just comfortable to play, like sinking into a nice armchair or something.

I am and honestly, have never stopped playing since 2008. I have tried many other games, but they all have fell short of the feel and the immersion i get from playing Oblivion. I have many chars, even though I lost them all due to my son accidentally erasing them all. I have started them all again. I keep it fresh by strict roleplaying and strict rules for each char. I usually create a new char once a week, complete with back story and his own agenda. I play all the TES games but find Oblivion to be my favorite of the 5. Skyrim being my least favorite. I honestly do not think I will ever stop playing this beautiful game.

Yeah, I totally get how writing fanfic could keep you interested. I started writing about a character a while back on the character updates and it really brought the character to life for me. However, it is a ton of work, and I quickly lost the energy and got behind in the writing, and as soon as that happened I lost interest in the character. For me, writing takes a lot of effort and work, and I recently decided that if I was going to put that much work into something, I'd rather write something that belongs to me instead of something that ultimately belongs to Bethesda. This gives me an idea though. The adventures of an Oblivion character could be a good source of inspiration for an original, non fanfic story. Kind of like Tolkien was inspired by Islandic eddas.

I agree Oblivion is comfortable to play. Probably why it is so comfortable to talk about.

I have just recently begun a new character in Oblivion. She is yet another of my Thief characters. I am addicted to playing Thieves in this game. But I don't play seven days a week anymore. I've been doing the ESO beta, Alice: Madness Returns and the 2013 Tomb Raider also. I often have several characters in several games going at the same time. I switch between them as the mood strikes me.

I am playing Oblivion for the first time. I started last August and am up to about 775 hours with my first character. I think I have the basics down fairly well and am looking forward to character number two.

I just finished a playthrough last week and did the MQ to completion and Mages Guild for the first time.

I've taken long breaks from Morrowind and Oblivion, but always come back eventually. it's like that old comfortable pair of shoes you just have to keep around and give a spin now and then because you know they won't dissapoint.

There's always a new way to play that I haven't tried before and areas I know I haven't explored thoroughly, so finding a reason to play again is never that difficult. I do switch to other games though to keep things interesting... currently in the middle of Far Cry 3 and finding it quite enjoyable from an open world shooter point of view :)

I'm playing Oblivion, but I've scaled back to a few hours a week. I'm slowly doing the "multiple-character challenge," and playing each character only in short bursts.

I'm currently playing a low-intelligence character in Fallout 2 (her name is Dert Gerl), and it's a lot of laughs. Dert Gerl is so dumb she can only speak in grunts and monosyllables, and the dialog is hilarious.

I've also gone back to the D&D roots, and installed Neverwinter Nights on my PC. I haven't played it for years, and I never played NWN2 (which I will be playing next.)

I will never abandon TES IV completely. Too many good characters keep invading my dreams... ;)

I don't play Oblivion at the moment, since the beginning of this year I'm playing Morrowind. I'll return to Oblivion eventually but not anytime soon.

My feelings when comparing MW and OB are more or less the same, both give me a very satisfactory feeling that is hard to describe. The main difference, however, is that this feeling lasts longer in Morrowind than in Oblivion, that's why all my MW characters are long-lasting (and in fact I created only a few, probably less than 5) while in OB I get bored of my characters sooner, so I often create new ones and sometimes completely lose interest in the previous ones.

I'm the opposite, I'm usually more active in that forums of which game I currently play. But since MW forums are slow-paced, I often come here and read some threads, I don't post as often as I did before, though.

I still play but not as regularly because then I feel something is lost. The magic vanishes if I play it every day now so I mainly play on weekends. That way it becomes more special, ya know? :)

I think it will always be my go-to game. Like Callidus said; it′s like sinking into a nice armchair

Been playing on and off for a while now, as I have been doing since the first time I played (after the first months of bingeing on the game). Since I discovered the series I've had at least one game on my "playing list" while I played other games--usually only one or two other games at a time by dividing the time either equally or dedicating more on the one I'm more interested at the moment. (Last week Fable Anniversary took up 90% of my play time).

Skyrim took that slot for a long time after release but after a while I got tired of the game due to all the disappointing aspects of the gameplay and the fact that it's much harder to role play in. Though Morrowind is much better at RP and Daggerfall much better than Morrowind, I find Oblivion to be the easiest to get into without sacrificing much. Like others said, it's like a comfy chair that's easy to get into. Sometime's I'll go back to MW and DF for weeks at a time, though.

But I'll have to give that Fallen Enchantress Elemental Heroes game you mentioned a try. It sounds like fun.

I'm currently playing Oblivion, but I'm in a phase where my gaming time is divided by several games, so I don't play it very frequently.

The other games I play now are Skyrim, Morrowind and DA:O, though Morrowind is mostly because I need to test a mod.

I'm still playing Oblivion, merely because of mods. I get surprised often, and I try all kind of different compilation so I can enjoy different feelings.

I've taken a break for a while again. Once I finish the story of my character in Skyrim, I'll play Morrowind again, and probably finish the MQ this time. But I also like to play Torchlight 2 sometimes, Neverwinter Nights 2, and I'll give DnD a go one day. I only play 1-2 hours a day so I don't see myself playing Oblivion anymore till summerbreak. (Exams!!!!) I downloaded the Bartholm mod, but Morrowind was too sticky.... It wouldn't let me stop playing. :(

Return to IV - Oblivion
