Go nuts. It's fairly open, do whatever you want. Follow the main quest or go explore. Id get some graphics mods from skyrimnexus for the best visual experience.

Mods make the game shine, but if no mods, then exploring is a good start. If you feel lost do the main quest, when in town talk to some NPCs, they might give you side-quests. Poke your nose in every cave. mine and whatnot you run across. Open books , they sometimes give you Skillups.

Join a mages, bards, fighters, etc guilds and do their quest lines. Lots to do once you start.

I'm tempted to buy the Elder Scrolls Anthology, as i haven't played Arena or Daggerfall. That game pack should be of interest to anyone getting to the series, if you can overlook the old graphics.

As to first time players, you might find these helpful:

Just go exploring, it's the games greatest strength. Go wherever you like and play how ever you like.

Don't wait for a quest to enter a cave or a ruin if you find it interesting(some quests you get from inside or just outside certain ruins), or just head of into whatever direction looks interesting and see where the road takes you.

Walk, or ride as much as your time alows and try to avoid fast travelling. some quests come to you while traveling.

Don't mod anything. If this is your first time, just playthrough it like you would any other game, and then consider modding your second playthrough if you enjoy it Harry.

Nothing wrong with going vanilla. :D

Yep. Nothing like playing with tons of mods! My characters regularly construct lightsabers of all colors, and the Death Star hangs in the night sky.
