Dear Bethesda... (Re: Future Fallout Research)

Dear Bethesda,

I wanted to write you guys a quick letter on something that might be invaluable to any future Fallout action we see. I would file it under "Research" for area design, primarily with Vaults and other complexes.

You see, you've just gotta take a look at this one game. They're not doing anything Fallout-like, but they've really nailed some of their environment design, and you should really ... at least take a look.

The game is Warframe. It's free-to-play, so it'll be easy for you guys to take a look around. The game is basically super-powered space ninjas in the superfuture hacking and slashing things as interplanetary bounty hunters. It's better than it sounds. The important thing is they've really outdone themselves in area design. There's an NPC faction there, the Grineer, who have this sort of dirty future Industrial look to their areas, a lot of which are apparently subterranean. Frankly, they look spacious, well-used, and utilitarian in the sort of ways that Vaults and such should look on the more powerful computing machines and consoles of today.

Seriously, you've got to take a look at this stuff. The only thing these places are missing are the sorts of design elements hit on by the most recent two Fallout games, but the scale and utilization of the areas is incredible. The places are cavernous. They look like they can accommodate a population for decades - centuries even. They look used - or in-use as the case may be - and they're the sort of enormous that we really ought to be seeing in the next Fallout in some of the larger Vaults.

Just take a look. It's what the next Fallout needs to inform its design - expansive vaults that look like they could actually hold dozens of people, that are subterranean but occasionally not just tunnels and claustrophobia.

Just... just look.
