Trait Research

Post » Tue Feb 25, 2014 12:53 am

Is there a ceiling on how many times the research timer doubles that anyone has discovered yet? It seems pretty limiting to me that even though we do have the ability to passive up and learn multiple traits at a reduced cost that the investment to learn everything within your craft is insanely time consuming. I can appreciate the system making you learn over time and not max out so quickly, I just hope that eventually mastering my craft will not be unattainable.

The doubling applies per item, and since there are 9 traits per item IIRC, the last one will take 32 days at the default speed (having doubled 8 times after the initial 6-hour research time of the first trait).

Note that the research being per-item means that if you want to research every trait for every item, you'll be spending 63.75 days of research time per item at the default speed. For something like tailoring, with 7 medium armor pieces and 7 light armor pieces, you'd need 892.5 days (which is just short of 2.5 years) to get every trait researched for every item at the default speed... and that's not counting any missed research time due to a project finishing when you're not online or can't get to a station!

The racial styles don't require time. They are books that you use and then you know the style.

Also there is a skill that allows you to research 2 traits, and it makes them go slightly faster I think.

Ah, this is fabulous news. I was under the impression that the trait timer was per tradeskill, not per item. This does take a lot of math out of the equation for sure and makes things MUCH more manageable! My thanks.

Researching of traits start off with 1 item per tradeline which can be improve via passives.

So, you can have 1 blacksmith, 1 woodwork and 1 clothing research ongoing at the same time.

Each traits have to be research individually for each item parts.

Such as Light armour torso research will only unlock the traits for light armour torso.

This kinda reminds me of EVE Online and having single skills that take 3 months or more to learn and you can only learn one skill at a time...(it isn't a fond memory)

That was my reflex reaction as well, and I hated that about EVE, but looking into the options that speed it up, if one is serious about it and takes the appropriate skills the time isn't that bad. Not to mention that as I understand it the timers are independent of one another from craft to craft, so say a woodworking and blacksmithing research can be run simultaneously.

the current system is anol retentive and contrary to popular belief making me spend 10 years learning skills to be effective in my class isnt a good way to retain players, I left eve soon as i did the actual math on how long it would take me to master my ships it worked out to like 7 real life years JUST to master my ships

If you are really dedicated, it seems you can research 3 traits at the same time per craft if you put points into the passives.

Also according to http://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Blacksmithing the research time will be reduced by 20% when maxed out.

Eh...after 15-20 levels you'll have plenty of skill points to spare. It's not like you really need to ration them like other games-that-shall-not-be-named.

hmm according to the talent point calculator unless I am mistaken the unliimited points has been changed, I am not positive though since it showed 50 points available at lvl 50 unless I was doing it wrong

It wasn't unlimited to begin with. 1 point per level up including vr. Then 1 point per 3 shard. And then other oints from quests.

There has to be more than 50 points available at level 50. You get one point per level, that alone covers 50 points at level 50. But then, on top of that, there are some quests that reward skill points and then there are the skill points from Skyshards.

People are estimating that we'll have somewhere around 250 skillpoints available if you get every skyshard and stuff. This is at launch. Dev's have said that they would probably add more later on.

Last figure I saw was 300 I think, but who really knows besides the devs.... The point is that dumping a few points into passive craft skills isn't really going to hurt a character in the long run.
