How will tanking work in PvP?

Post » Mon Feb 24, 2014 7:51 pm

In some other mmo's that I have played PvP in (Warhammer Online, Swtor), there were certain built in mechanics to make tanking more viable in PvP. Mechanics like 'guard' and 'taunt'.

I know we have 2 taunts in this game, but I have't heard any notice about if it will decrease damage done by other players to everyone else except you. This was how they did it in the mmo's I mentioned. It put more emphasis on tanks and made them more of a priority target. These taunts also came in an AoE form.

Guard is an ability that puts a buff on one of your allies so that you take 50% or so of the damage that he gets. Another mechanic to make tanks more of an important role and target on the battlefield. Combined with a healer, this was a force to be reckoned with in pvp groups.

Now I'm not asking for this to be implemented into ESO. I'm just wondering how tanking will work in this game. What makes tanks tanks in ESO PvP, aside from more survivability and gimped dps?

I must say I was a big fan of the Swtor mechanic for tanks it actually gave them a purpose other than node defence in pvp. I would like this implemented in some fashion in ESO.

Essentially you will be on the front line and because of no collision and the way that the game/pvp flow/ is designed (they have no incentive to target you first) the only people attacking you will be doing it because of knee jerk reaction and just wanting to hit something.
You will also need to avoid red circles and stand in green ones according to an article that I read on Tamriel Foundry earlier (damage aoe and healing aoe spells). You could probably force them to focus more on you while your group pushes if you dive their mages/trebuchets/back line.
As long as you have dedicated healing you can soak up damage while both zergs exchange stamina and magicka resources until one wins. Here's an example

Collision is only enabled for NPCs, not PvP. If only!

Not in PvP? Well that's a big let down. I saw all these posts on forums applauding the fact that collision was included. I was thinking of players forming line of battle to defend breaches in walls, and maybe a counter-charge pushing back attackers. :(

Sure, but you'd risk getting pulled away further from your group or getting seperated too much in another way. The vid is interesting though, and it further reinforces my delight over the fact that TTK seems fine and not like 2 sec as in SWTOR. And yea, from playing Warhammer Online, I know CD could have been awsome for tanks. Defending stomped down gates and chokepoints with a shield wall and all that. But seeing as the devs have said they have tested that already, and found that it was too easy to defend chokepoints, I'm at peace with that. But I'd rather not see my topic turn into a CD yes/no topic. I'm simply looking for good and creative ideas on how tanks can distinguish themselves from the rest.
