Kyne or Kynareth?

Post » Wed Feb 26, 2014 9:27 pm

Okay. This is my understanding of the two gods.

Kynareth: One of the Nine divines. The Nine divines being formed by St Alessia? Though I may be wrong. She took already exciting Gods, and put nine of them into the new Imperial pantheon. Kynareth is an extremely popular god still worshiped today. Even the Nords refer to her as Kynareth. The brings me onto Kyne..

Kyne: I've always understood Kyne to be the Nordic version of Kynareth. But if that's true, then why does everyone in Skyrim refer to her as Kynareth? Including the Greybeards and the Priests in Whiterun. Kyne is also supposedly the maiden of Shor in Nordic lore. Shor being Lorkhan. And we know Shor exists because we've seen him. So Lorkhan must be a false name?

So my question is this: If Kyne is the Nordic aspect of Kynareth, why is she not even worshiped in Skyrim? Is Kyne the Nordic aspect of Kynareth? I think she is...

Also, I would like more information on Alduin if at all possible. From what I've heard, he is the Nordic version of Akatosh. Though Alduin refers to himself as the "first born of Akatosh."

Remember there is a single quest in Skyrim about the old way of worshiping Kyne, not Kynareth? What we see in the 4E Skyrim that the Divines took place of the Nordic pantheon could be seen as the result from hundreds of years of Imperialization.

My pet theory is that Kynareth is not pure Kyne in the way of aspects. The racial personality of the Nord and the Cyrod are different, which would directly reflect into the personality of the aspects of god they worship, as the aspects of Aedra, at least how they are believed to behave, are strongly affected by the belief of those who worship them. Also, when Alessia created the Eight Divines she combined the Nordic pantheon with the Ayleidoon pantheon. Although we cannot find the corresponding aspect of Kyne in Elven pantheon (though some presumed candidates have been discussed in the forum), it seems rational that the aspect Kynareth had absorbed some certain elven character, just like the Cyrod had absorbed more elven influence than the Nords.

Kyne is the true sky goddess.

"Kynareth" is nothing more than a blasphemous appeasemant to the elves.

And the reason why most Nords in-game revere that Cyrodilic god is purely due to a developmental choice made by MK and the rest of Bethesda's writers. According to MK, we would have hated the initially proposed implementation of the Nordic Pantheon.

This reminds me of Todd Howard's comments on spell-making and spreadsheets.

That makes so sense. What's to hate about a Nordic pantheon?

Thanks for the information people! What about Alduin? How do todays Nords feel about him? (before he returned.)

According to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Alduin_is_Real and other NPCs whose I cannot recall, Alduin is the same evil dragon that we all know and love who existed only in legends. Most Nords were not certain if he and the other dragons ever even existed.

Compare that to modern-day Europe. Dragons appear in our own fairy tales, yet there is no proof of their existence. The world would be quite shocked if a dragon were to suddenly attack a major town or city, just like the Nords of the 4th Era.

The only Nord that still seems to worship Kyne still is Froki all the other Nords have been thoroughly imperialized and worship the Cyrodilic gods and not their own even the stormcloaks.

I always understood Kynareth as a amalgamation of the Nordic Kyne and Aldmeri Y'ffre. You have Kyne in how she's primarily associated with the sky and an ally of humanity, but the Y'ffre creeps in through her love of nature and the wilds.

Y'ffre would be the most likely Ayleid god for them to combine with Kyne when they were first forming the Imperial Pantheon.

The imperial pantheon was a compromise by Alessia to make the elven gods, who the Heartlanders knew from the Ayleids, palatable to her Nord cohorts. So yes, Kynareth is Kyne- sort of. She's Kyne changed to suit Heartlander tastes and incorporating elements of the elven god http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Y%27ffre#Y.27ffre. Since mythopoiea operates on the aedra- belief makes reality- this change probably changed the goddess herself, such that even worshippers claiming to worship "Kyne," like Froki and the Greybeards, are operating on an understanding of the new version.

If you want to get to know Kyne as she was, you have to read http://www.imperial-library.info/content/shor-son-shor-full. And http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Varieties_of_Faith... too.

My personal headcanon is that somewhere there's a folktale that says, basically, that Kyne and Jephre were once siblings, and when Jephre gave himself to become the Earthbones, Kyne took upon herself his titles and duties, thus, Kynareth.

One thing to note: The old Imperial pantheon was Eight. The Ninth was missing: Shor, or Lorkhan. That spot was filled, once again, once the Underking was freed from his eartlhy wanderings during the Warp of the West to join with the other two parts of what became Talos, who then became the Ninth Divine. But before that, they were Eight and One... with the One being the Missing God.

I would really like to know how Kyne is supposed to be interpreted, even My Headcanon Kyne would not be popular to anyone that plays Elves, except for a few Dunmer Players. The fact that She is reffered to as the "Kiss at the End" and She did make a hole in the Void to place creation into, despite Shor/Shezzar/Lorkhan being the Space aspect of the Space/Time Deity. Kyne is definitely not a Peace Loving Goddess, Morihaus is Her Son, and Morihaus refers to Pelinal as Uncle.
