have always wanted to learn to play d & d (or similar) tabletop version.alas i never knew anyone who played them.

I can also recommend the order of the stick comic. It's really funny even if you don't know the rules. You can find the comic on the first forum I linked, giant in the playground. You can ask around for help at either. There is usually regular newbie games to learn the rules as well. Finally there is a rules listing for http://www.d20srd.org/. Though I still recommend learning it with someone. Or even picking up the core rules which will help explain a lot of things much better.
