Maximum View Distance

Post » Thu Feb 27, 2014 9:28 am

I'm a big fan of games with extreme view distances. To me it is the biggest factor in enhancing emersion. Take vanilla Morrowind for example, then take the Morrowing Overhaul that blows away the max distance fog and lets you see forever, it's like night and day. I didn't know how beautiful Morrowind was until I played the Overhaul.

TESO's current MAX view distance is a little underwhelming to me, it is obvious that they restricting it by adding layers of "fog" on things far away. For example I was kinda dissappointed when I could not see the glorious high tower of the Cyrodiil Imperial city even from the shores across the moat. :( Or when I stood atop one of the highest points in Daggerfall city I saw an obvious wall of fog obscuring anything far away and preventing me from seeing the harbor. This, again, is on max view distance settings in-game.

I noticed there is a .ini file that has a line for view distance, but increasing it seemed to do nothing last beta weekend. Someone please correct me if I did it wrong. It is as if they disabled this feature, hopefully only temporary.

I understand that Zenimax does this to control performance.....but those of us with killer systems should be allowed to go into the .ini and push things to our hearts content. This game is beautiful!....plz don't limit it's potential by hard locking the max view distance.

Here's to hoping that they allow us to push it back as far as we want by release! :celebration:

I would like to see settings like this also. Whether it is done in settings/options or we have to go into a file to do it either way I would like to see everything I can.

i would assume that like the stress test and collision detection tests, that the clip range will be modified based on results of the tests depending what the client can handle

Yes, i'd like to be able to see everything in the very far distance too. Hopefully they will allow us to improve the max view distance even further upon launch.

In my last beta I could see as far as possible, nothing was being drawn as I got closer, or appear out of nowhere.

I'm curious about this as well, one of my favorite parts of any game is to be able to look out a few miles and know " I can go there", really helps add to the massive world feel

Turning up anti aliasing can often help with view distance alot, depending on your gfx capabillities ofcourse.

So you are saying you could see the Imperial City in Cyrodiil?

I'm not talking about small objects poping up from nowehere I am talking about landscape in the far distance being obscured by fog.

Anti-aliasing does absolutely nothing about view distance. Changing the .ini file to gain a gameplay advantage (ie see further than max available setting) would technically be cheating and should get people banned on live... Even if their excuse happen to be "I just think the fog svcks!". Not that it matters much if the LOD is still enforced and the setting is still overriden by server.
