I Was Wrong: ESO is going to be great

Post » Sat Mar 01, 2014 8:36 am

I was wrong about Elder Scrolls Online.

Many of you might remember how negative I have been about Elder Scrolls Online. I have complained time and time again about the how a subscription fee with a theme park and relying on your IP does not work. I complained about the reasoning behind spending so much money for voice-over work that will be skipped by a lot of MMO players (especially in groups). I complained about the animations being poor, the UI being sub-par, and the questing being hit and miss and drawn out, especially going long periods without any progress on your leveling bar.

I was perhaps too hard in my initial reaction to this game. I think we tend to look back at Morrowind and Skyrim as the standard. But looking back, without mods, Morrowind was not exactly perfect itself, The inventory was odd, a lot of Imperial faces were re-used, the quest text was tiny, etc. Even with the updated quest journal, Morrowind's quest flow made it almost impossible to play if you took a couple months break from the game. You would log in, and have to spend quite a while remembering what you were supposed to be doing.

Yes there are some things here that could be better in EVERY game. No game is perfect.

But I can't stop thinking about the last couple beta weekends I was in. I miss Elder Scrolls Online. I want to be playing it, right now, as I write this from work. There is something about this game that just feels right. The game is absolutely gorgeous in every way. The performance is something to behold. In the past few betas I have had zero slow downs or disconnections. But my thoughts go deeper. I am an Elder Scrolls fan. I want to soak up every bit of lore and history there is. I will take my time leveling, listen to all of the excellent voice-over work, and just enjoy it all.

I purchased the Digital Imperial Edition yesterday, and it felt great!

No game is perfect. However, this game might be perfect for a lot of us Elder Scrolls fans..

While it is important to be fairly critical of anything to prevent bias, I'm glad you've had that experience. Ive always liked ESO since I first tried it, and told people who don't that ' it's ok not to like what I like '. I hope you enjoy your time with ESO.

I think we all have concerns, some obviously are louder about them then others lol.

All I ever ask is give the game a fair chance and I'd bet more often then not you will like the game. Glad to see this looks like what has happened. See ya at launch! :tops:

Don't worry. Most of us just ignore posts like this one.

When someone comes on and says stuff before a game is out of beta the community gives it the attention it deserves.

Don't be too hard on yourself.

Ohh how touching! You became a white knight now....! Just kidding.

Seriously though there's nothing wrong with constructive criticism. We are customers and they are providers, we should always let them know what would be better for us. There are things I don't like and things I do. But, them trying npc collision tipped the scales and made the purchase certain. Shows something positive about how they want to treat the game in the future too.

Glad you came around. But you are mistaken about Morrowind. It was perfect. But only for a single player game.

I hope you enjoy TESO on the long term. I won't play beta this weekend. Ill wait for the release in April. Bah, i wish they would release earlier.

I'm the exact opposite... I was a huge fan of the elder scrolls series, even created a few mods for skyrim and I just can't get into this game. The combat feels clunkier. No auction house. Lots of little nuances like the map, the interface and the fact that this was dumbed down enough to support consoles.

Right now it's a huge no go for me. Honestly don't think much of this will change prior to release... or even any time soon after release.

Maybe 1 year from now but honestly don't see myself playing this over Wildstar or even Rift which I just recently started playing again.

No. Wrong. Ugh, this makes me blow a gasket. It was made for PC for YEARS before they decided to hit up the console market.

I'm sorry, but did I not see a 5-skill limitation? And 2 other hard-coded button slots? No way to right-click and inspect another player, see what class they are, send them a tell, etc... The list goes on and on.

And this game, which is in beta, was made years ago? lmfao.

/doublefacepalm

The Elder Scrolls Online had been in development for 5 years prior to its announcement in May 2012.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_Online#cite_note-GIReveal-1 It is the first project for ZeniMax Online Studios, which was formed in 2007. It's important to note that many of us, whether positive or negative about the game are passionate about our stances because we love TES so much and while I certainly don't expect everyone to be head over heals for the game it's nice to see someone change their mind and realize the games potential. See you guys in beta later today or this weekend!

So how do I enable more action bar slots? How do I enable more than 5 skills at once?

How do I identify a player's class, or level, or look at their gear? How do I right-click on someone to send them a tell?

etc....

I don't care what some article says.. I'm in the game empirically experiencing this with my own 2 eyes. The interface and mechanics are nerve wracking at best.

You need to upgrade your gasket material. That should eliminate the problem. Or you may not have followed the proper torque sequence. Maybe both?

On topic; they have separate systems for PC and console. I played one Online Game on the PS2: EQ online and it was fantastic! Playing on a large TV, sitting in my lazy-boyTM.

Sadly, it sounds like the core components of the interface/game mechanics do not appeal to you. I'm sorry to hear that for you, it is a really enjoyable game. I can understand your complaints though. I am not all trying to be combative when I say that there are other games that may interest you if you can't get used to the interface and such.

Sorry man! :(
