Tank Info

Post » Mon Mar 03, 2014 12:06 am

I am planning to main a Tank(sword and shield) at launch, but also would like to use 2H or other melee DPS weapons. I realize any class/race can do any job but I wanted to get opinions on how to really be a good main tank / sub DPS. If anyone has any links to any other topics or compiled info on best Tank builds, please assist.

I am assuming from that Templar will be the best Tank option, and either Redguard or Orc. Agree / Disagree?

Dragonknight is probably your best bet for the classic tank class. They can have ridiculous mitigations.

DK, yeah. Templar tank appeals to me more, but strictly speaking I think a DK is the stronger tank. Just watch your resource management. That often gets overlooked by people wanting to build tanks.

What do you mean by resource management?

Well, which class can actually hold hate the best on a pack of mobs?

He's refering to stamina and magicka. You'll need to run a balanced build between the two as the several of your skills will be 1H+Shield based (costs stamina) and several will be DK based (costs magicka although it has abilities to restore magicka/stamina).

I'd disagree with Templar. Just my opinion, but I see DK's Draconic Power as the best Tanking tree. Increased blocking, self healing, a sizable buff to health regen, increased armour and a spell reflect ability. Add to that an ultimate that can be morphed into a superb tank ability (charge + aoe damage for threat + defensive buffs for a few seconds after its use).

I'd also say Nord is a good tank race - boost to armor score (though unsure of what caps are) and a boost to health regen.

From my limited experience as a Dunmer Templar with sword and board I make a lousy tank, I just can't absorb enough damage (armour rating is orange so fully pumped and HP is at a ratio of 2/1 to stamina, no magicka)
I'm not sure why but I generally feel "gimped" like the game is telling me 'you shouldn't be playing like this' in fact I know it is because I can't rank down random encounter normal boss mobs without getting my ass handed to me simply because in sword and board format my DPS is so low I hardly scratch anything. Feels like vanilla WoW Paladin without the great heals and strong armour.

I still think Sorcerer has better tools for tanking than Templar, simply because they have a broad mix of defensive boosts, self heals, and CC options. If you're looking for a traditional tank Dragon Knight or Sorcerer looks like the way to go.

For aggro management, you want a taunt (stamina-based Puncture from 1h+shield AND/OR magicka-based Inner Fire from Undaunted). Taunt has some odd quirks in ESO. It takes a moment to kick in, and boss mob special attacks sometimes ignore taunt. You also want a root. Sometimes, a root is the best way to control aggro. Keep in mind that some creatures/bosses will be immune to root.

Armor is easy to soft cap for any race when using heavy armor, after enchants. Can be soft capped with medium armor and buffs. Best to go heavy armor, because you'll want to be able to go past soft cap. I'd bet money we'll see bosses that can reduce your armor. Not to mention your spell resistance will be higher, and you're easier to heal in heavy armor.
