Soft caps and the lack of specialization.

Post » Mon Mar 03, 2014 7:15 am

I must say that the whole soft cap (overcharge) system in this game, is a major letdown! When I first heard how the skill system in this game worked, I was hugely excited, because I love games with a lot of diversity and choice, in character building.

But then I learned about soft caps, and how the game ACTUALLY works!

Currently, there's no point to specializing in anything. There's also hardly any point to put points into anything but health, since health is the only stat that doesn't cap, and also gives you +20 per point, rather than +10 that magika/stamina gives. What this means, is everyone that has half a brain will have 50 points into health at level 50, since you can either choose to have like +100% extra health, or like +20% extra damage.

It also means there's hardly any point to specializing in any stat or role. It punishes someone for trying to focus on being an exceptional tank, or exceptional DPS, etc.. This really needs to change!!!

I was upset too. I tried a heavily armored sorcerer tank build this time, and to my surprise ( I completely forgot about it), it was far, far over the armor cap with any of my sorcerer armour abilities. I was a little let down.

Sorcerer tank was still fun though. I might make one.

Yeah, I was thinking of using this very thing as an example, in my post. It makes no sense to me at all, that the cap is so low...

yea the cap as the be bumped a bit. Bu it's hard to say for me though as I only have got to lv 15 and there might be some things in the fine prints that I have missed.

I understand why they did it. They didn't want players to have more than 50% mitigation.

Still a bummer though. I figure I'll use them for my light armor PvP healing spec to increase my armour, which may be the point.

Then they should scale back the amount of damage that armor stat mitigates, not soft cap the stat.

If they made it so that obtaining 50% mitigation took a crap ton of armor, it would be fine.

I don't particularly understand why when we're in full armor we have so much absorption already, yeah. I agree with that.

But I think it does take a crap ton of armor, as the hard cap is 50% and you reach diminishing returns long before that.

I find it incredibly silly, that I'd probably go with medium armor (as a nightblade), if I were a tank. Because of armor cap, I see nightblades as being the best possible tanks (Blur + Evade + Siphoning Strikes, etc..).

Heavy armor? lol

It's possible

Nightblade tank isn't my preference personally but you can definitely tank with all the classes.

But best? I don't know. The armor is still a flat reduction. Maybe.

With Shadow Barrier, you can easily hit the armor cap, and regen the magika back from siphoning. And I also forgot -15% damage from summon shade.

But anyways, this isn't just about armor. Armor just happens to be one of the more ludicrous examples.

The real problem is that this system forces people to be hybrids, and significantly reduces specialization choices.

It's not mitigation vs. dodge, in this case. You'll cap your mitigation AND get the dodge, in medium armor. That's the whole point of what I'm saying here.

The soft cap actually punishes you for going for high mitigation in heavy armor.

But isn't all that kinda mute when you can just move to avoid the hit in the first place? Magic DMG won't decrease vs armor you need resist?
