PC version BETTER have controller support!

Post » Tue Mar 04, 2014 6:35 am

I wouldn't exactly put it that way. The minimal UI and the layout of the menu system is like it was made for a controller. I don't think the actual gameplay on the console will be any different than the PC, as far as adaptive controls.

Like I said in my previous post. I use it now.

Art style doesn't = controll style. Look at gw2, how ever awful that is.

So you think the developers made the PC version of the game with controllers specifically in mind?

Where did art style come into the equation?

Can't type "/reloadui" on a console controller.

Though thankfully, entering your mailbox worked just as well, at least in the weekend beta.

I didn't say that. However, they must have some thought going in to it. The developers were on stage with controllers at their PCs during an earlier gameplay showing.

You brought up the ui, that's an art direction not designed because controllers could work, consoles are geting a different ui for that reason.

He didn't say it was his job; stop being an asshat.

Back on track now - Fortunately the devs haven't wasted any effort catering to the controller fans. They have already stated that there is no native controller support and they were not looking into adding it into the PC release. Of course, that may change but I rather hope they spend their time adding more content and refining existing content first.

Honestly yes i think they always had a console port as an option and thats why they went for a minimalist UI and a 5+1 skillbar.

Incidentally, it is also a good thing for the gameplay (in my opinion).

Again i always played with keyboard + mouse but i dont see why a controller wouldnt work on THIS game; its not like FFXIV where i had 25 skills on my bar and used most of them.

I don't see it that way. I look at the UI and the overall art style as different aspects. You are free to call it what you want, I suppose. They don't need a different UI. The current UI and in-game menu works quite well.

For some reason people think that using a controller is some otherworldly implement. It's just keybindings.

Has anyone actually tried this with xpadder and a controller? While I like the mouse/keyboard combo, I'm at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome and controllers are a lot easier on my wrists. If the xpadder/controller combo really works for this game, I'll definitely go that route.

lol@/reloadui

Full control of ESO can easily be done with a controller. Once again, Xpadder is a stuttery mess not deserving of consideration as in-game controller support is always better.

Keep in mind ZOS has already had to figure out how to make this game work on controller for console and porting that code is a snap.

6 combat abilities (max at any one time), quickslot, quickslot wheel, interact, cancel, jump, lock-on, sprint, weapon swap, camera zoom. That's 15 buttons you'd need (give or take one or two, in case I missed something) which is easily doable on modern controllers through easy held trigger/bumper combinations.

Check out FFXIV if you want to see some smart, effective, gamepad control.

Not any more awkward than target switches between mobs. And ESO has totally eliminated this problem with free-form targeting.

Way more than 12 keys are bound for TESO. Granted, some of these are related to chat, but I counted 30 different key bindings that I could use in the game

http://teso.mmorpg-life.com/teso-list-controls-keyboard-commands/

Hard enough for me to remember those, much less some button macro combos to try to cover all the bases.

I quit using a controller on TES Games back in 2003 when I got off the couch. I even recently bought a 360 controller for my PC to play Bioshock and Dishonored (two games that are designed for a controller) and unplugged it after 15 minutes and went back to the keyboard.

So, I am not missing out on anything in my games using a Keyboard and Mouse.

The gamepad merely supplements keyboard play, it doesn't replace it. And you don't need anywhere near 30 keybinds. Not even close. You need replacements for 1-5, Q, E, R, Z, WASD, Alt, Shift, Space, Mouse Movement, Mouse Scroll, Left/Right Mouse Click. anolog sticks handle WASD, mouse movement and scroll, and everything else is easily mapped to face buttons and trigger+face combos. Done. Other keybinds are for stuff like character sheets and inventory menus that can be accessed with a Main Menu button on the controller somewhere.

This is something that has been done successfully in other games before (FFXIV), and apparently by ZOS as well since there is a console version. I don't think the argument, 'It won't work' has much merit given the evidence.

I don't think this should be a controversial issue at all. I like keyboard and mouse, but sometimes I'd just like to chill out with a gamepad and not hunch like a zombie over a desk. The decision not to include gamepad support feels arbitrary to me, if not lazy or cheap.

Exactly. Teamspeak replaces the keyboard to an extent, and if needed the keyboard is still there and close enough.

Profiles were all over the beta forums.

Controllers are why I dont play consoles(well that and crappy selection of my favored game types). Hate them.

I see no point why ZoS can't implement actual controller support.

I use Xpadder and am pretty happy with my setup.

Need some keyboard controls - map, inventory etc but apart from that it does it pretty well.

Have used a 2nd set for 4,5 and Ultimate.
