Vampires and Gargoyles

Post » Wed Mar 05, 2014 6:52 am

Hello guys!

Just a simple question? What is the connection between vampires and gargoyles? In skyrim, gargoyles are the puppets of vampires, but as far as I know, in reality, gargoyles are defenders against darkness and evil creatures. So how does it become to make them ally, Or am I wrong?

Where did you hear that they are "defenders against darkness and evil creatures" Harry? I don't think that's correct, though I'm probably wrong. :P

AFAIK, Gargoyles have pretty much always been an architectural thing, rather than being architectural representations of a distinct mythical creature. I think they're designed to look like 'a scary demonic thing' rather than 'a creature called a gargoyle', if you see what I mean. Their purpose was, I suspect, mainly to protect against the evil of rainwater damaging the building, plus to look intimidating. Possibly that was meant to intimidate scary demonic things and stop them approaching the church, but in a kind of heads on spikes way rather than them representing a creature which defends against demons and that.

TES =/= real life mythology, as you probably already learned. If ebony can be volcanic glass then gargoyles can be allies to vampires I guess.

Historically they were often built to ward off evil spirits (and prevent leaking during the rain lol).

Ninja'd by valandril, but yes, many gargoyles were represented as ugly-looking people, dragons, lions and whatever else. It took a while before people started to classify a gargoyle as specific creature.

Welcome to the forum!
What everyone else said, pretty much. (Although I've often wondered at this myself.)
