Large amount of items stolen?

Post » Tue May 04, 2010 4:55 pm

I started a "knight" type character that never does anything wrong about a day ago. I have 20 fame and 0 infamy and, here's the weird part, 567 stolen items. I checked 30 minutes ago and that's what it said. WTF? I never even looked at an item that had a red hand on it and I only started the character a day ago. How did I get such a huge stolen item stat?

Yea, this exact thing happened to my LG paladin character. Who is so very careful not to steal or tamper with items. One day she's about to walk in Chorrol and all the sudden she gets arrested! I was like what for????? And later I noticed there were 837 stolen items on her permanent record.

Personally, I jsut roleplayed it like this: somewhere there's a corrupt guard who tried to frame Dyan (that's my paladin). There actually is a corrupt guard or something in the IC. The corrupt guard perhaps tried to frame her in an attempt at a very long jail sentence, but it didn't work.

Well, if your "Knight" type character actually is a knight of the white stallion then it is easy to account for 301 stolen items.

Basically gold in owned containers tends to add to your "items stolen" count for every septim, even if taking it was not a crime.

I am a knight of the white stallion, I didn't know gold in owned containers counted as stolen items. Why is that?

Yea my Pally did this questline, too. Actually, she failed at it because Mazoga wound up dying before the end. I had no idea this is where the glitch comes from, thanks.

Yeah this happened to me but on my PS3 version. I forget why but it was something stupid, only if I remembered what it was. Also if I remember correctly casting magic behind a human enemy without notice counts as an assault.

An oversight really, most containers are either unowned or owned by individuals or by non-evil factions ( the use of evil here is specific in that there is a flag in the game data that is checked to determine this rather than any actual moral issue)

In a few cases there are chests owned by evil factions, Stealing from these factions is not considered a crime by the guards but still needs to be checked in certain cases, since there is at least one evil faction that the player can join.

I've also occasionally noticed (thanks to Oblivion XP) that occasionally when I'm traveling on horseback somewhere, I start gaining XP out of nowhere for stealing something over and over again. Gee, I didn't know air is at such a premium in Cyrodiil.

The way I see it, Oblivion sometimes adds thefts to your permanent record because it can. Do not dispute, or you shall be :obliviongate: .

So you're telling me you're getting steal when riding horse? Maybe because you stole it.

Incorrect, what was happening was I was riding my armored (that is, legally obtained) white horse past Skingrad, when the mod suddenly brought to my attention that my Theft count was rising (it detects whenever the game increases your Theft count and grants you experience points for it), even though I was doing nothing but traveling at the time. This happened about 20 times until I finally got far enough away from Skingrad to stop it. I had stolen nothing in the area at all, all I can reason is my theft count was just rising because the game thought it wanted to be funny with me. The mod itself was not causing this, it was just telling me this was happening, hence why I posted this here.

For this reason, if you are playing a Paladin, I say pay no attention to that statistic because the game loves to mess around with it. Just make sure you never, ever have a single red-hand flagged item in your inventory and that's good enough for me.

If you have a mage, forget the perfectly clean record. Something similar happens in an early Mages Guild quest and I'm not talking about the two quests where stealing is optional. Merely following the required quest line will result in a stat of two stolen items. Even more annoying is the fact that if you have a companion mod and your companion witnesses the action, you receive a bounty for stealing. it can come back to haunt a mage later. You can randomly be suddenly accused of stealing from a guild member and kicked out of the guild even if no one saw you do it originally.

Well if you have mods then you can't blame the game.

So yes, basically, avoid containers belonging to named factions. Particularly containers with gold-- every septim counts towards the statistic.

On the main quest, you will unfortunately acquire 1 point on your stolen items statistic, whether you like it or not. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it, to my knowledge:
Spoiler
the Mysterium Xarxes

I believe that's fixed by the Unofficial Patch.
