After the recent patch on closed beta (the patchnotes that has been going around on the net, a later build than the stresstest one), the devs decided to change and nerf the templar skill "restoring spirit" completely instead of adjusting numbers, which has made the whole class mana starved and mediocre especially in endgame content.
The passive ability was maybe too good in some situations before, but they should rather have tweaked the number instead of changing the whole ability and making the most mana dependant class become useless compared to the rest.
With the latest patch on closed beta:
Playing a heavy armor templar is NOT possible anymore (what happened to lore?)
Same goes for medium armor.
AND same goes for light armor! Even with LIGHT ARMOR, the mana starvation is a huge issue after this change. The templars are already very mana dependant as a class, and now they changed one mechanic that really makes the whole class mediocre, especially later in the game.
Restoration staff skill line is already better for heals than the templar heal abilities, so what is really the point playing templar healer instead of a sorceror healer?
Here's the problem:
There are lots of 50+ VR players who report that there is little point playing a templar as either healer or melee fighter compared to sorc, dk or nb with these changes, and if you want to be a healer, playing a sorc has way more advantages because of superior mana regen. DKs are not as mana dependant as templars, yet they have slightly better mana regen than templars. Nightblades have much better abilities for this compared to templars as well.
The 50 VR players are now basically saying templars will be the weakest of them all if this change hits release, and no point playing compared to any other class no matter what role you want to do, because they changed one mechanic that drastically change how the class works.
DEVS: PLEASE ADJUST THE NUMBERS INSTEAD OF REMOVING A MECHANIC COMPLETELY THAT THE WHOLE CLASS RELIES ON TO COMPETE ENDGAME SO TEMPLARS WON'T BE USELESS ON RELEASE. AFTER THIS CHANGE, TEMPLARS ARE WORSE IN EVERY SINGLE ROLE COMPARED TO THE OTHER CLASSES.
DK's are already overpowered enough at endgame 50+ with many different builds (magma armor? most OP invinsible ability in the game), yet they get buffs, while Sorcerors are very very strong as well. So there is really no need to destroy one class completely with this change when they can tweak numbers to make it balanced instead.
