Any other Fallout# players having trouble getting into Obliv

Post » Wed May 05, 2010 5:14 pm

I am a complete Fallout3 lover so i figured that I would try Oblivion. I like fantasy settings and have enjoyed many games in them. I just can't seem to get into Oblivion. Despite the fact that it has tons of Quests, I just don't get the same rush I get when i play Fallout3. Does anyone have any advice for Oblivion to get the same magic back? I understand people LOVE oblivion so please don't turn this into a which game is better thread. Thanks for all your input

I went the same as Colonel Martyr above (TES to FO) and i found it difficult as there were a lack of quests, but i liked FO as it was quirky, more scary and better characters (and you could kill them!). The gameplay of both are very different,s o just dive in and choose a weapon that looks cool, heck you could go in with your bare fists and punch your way out the other side.
Just explore the various caves and ruins about, in TES there is much more choice for roleplaying imo, just immerse yourself and you'll find it fun eventually.

If you are having troubles getting into Oblivion, then maybe try another game? Or at least say which particular aspects you do not like.

I love both games. I find Oblivion to be dramatically larger, more factions that you can actually join, more quests, hundreds (yes, literally hundreds) of different caves, forts, ruins all over the place. What really brings it home for me is the nearly limitless ways of playing. There is certainly a lot of freedom in FO3, one of the reasons I purchased the game, but there is even more when you factor in the different races you can be, and the different powers that they wield.

You might dabble in a little magic in Oblivion. My mage has definitely been the most fun ever; custom class, custom rules, the ability to take down an enemy by lifting one finger, or if I prefer, take someone down with a single arrow or seriously a lot of fun for me, get into a melee battle with a big claymore with multiple enemies.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/939912-oblivion-character-database/ is the Oblivion Character Database. You might find some interesting ideas in here.

CM, this is exactly how I feel. I'm in my 3rd game of Oblivion while I'm waiting for FNV to be released and I'm having a great time.

It's going to be what you make it, gw. There's a lot to explore and there are dark parts too. I don't play those so others can tell you about them. Fallout3 has a lot of action and the gruesome death scenes are many, which is one thing I like about Oblivion..that it doesn't have them. I'll be playing F3 again someday too though. Someone made a comment about death scenes on the FNV forum...I need to reply over there. :D

It's the open world and freedom that makes the game. I hope you find something in it for you.

The error lays in comparing the two games and expecting them to be the same, only difference being using guns or swords. They are two different games belonging to two different franchies. Leave behind you the expectations and enjoy Oblivion for what it is, without comparing it to Fallout 3.

I've never played Fallout but here are some suggestions if you want to ramp up the action in Oblivion.

For the best adrenaline-rush sort of action, do the Kvatch quests. You are also guaranteed a lot of action in the planes of Oblivion. Also, you will find that goblins in the dungeons around Cyrodiil are nothing like the wusses in the tutorial dungeon. They are tough and they come in bunches.

I played Oblivion before Fallout 3 and I like both of them. I really didn't have much trouble getting into Fallout 3 but my biggest problem when I started playing Oblivion was getting used to 1st person view. Now though I have no problems with 1st person view.

Another one that went from Oblivion to fallout. I agree with Tabris93 in that the two games should not be compared to each other, they are different game with different goals. Despite what others may have you believe Fallout IS NOT Oblivion with guns. If you can get past this it may be easier to enjoy Oblivion for what it is; A great RPG in which magic is heavily used and reality should be thrown out the window.

Also you can try avoiding the main quest beyond The siege at Kvatch, you will still want those Oblivion gates open, they will come in handy.

Don't forget that the lower levels in oblivion can be a real PITA, even boring. After about level 11 or 12 it should get better.

Like others said, it's foolish to compare these two games together. One's a fantasy game set in a fantasy land where elves, orcs, and beast folks roam among men. Another's a grueling, scary game set in a post-nuclear USA. The only thing Oblivion comes CLOSE to a nuked out setting is Kvatch and the planes of Oblivion.

When I play Fallout 3, I don't say "'K, this is Oblivion with guns" or for Oblivion "K, this is Fallout 3 with swords and magic"

I play them for what they are.

If you don't like Oblivion, well, perhaps that specific game or the genre doesn't suit your tastes? It's perfectly all right to not like Oblivion and/or the Elder Scrolls. :)

All joking aside, it's possible that Oblivion may not be for you if you still can't get into it . I still have a hard time getting into Morrowind. Go figure.

Can't help you much, adding some mods could enhance your experience... but I'd advise you to play through the game without mods though before modding it.

...but if you really can't get into the game, and it gets boring, try modding it... if you are playing the PC version that is.

I came from Tes as well, played the original FO's though, and tbh it took me a long time to get oblivion as well.

Maybe its the slower more bashy combat style of Oblivion thats got to you as combat can feel a little like constant overlord killing ( bullet sponges )sometimes.
Even the fact thats its a lot larger in scale so you miss all the little details that FO3 put everywhere.

If the first of those are the case, then turn the difficulty down, just wear clothes and the odd piece of armour to make combat just as difficult but alot quicker.
The second, all anyone can suggest is make up little minigames and stories of your own, or use mods if you're able to.

I never play Oblivion in 1st person view. I wonder: did you feel you had to play in 1st person for some reason? You can always switch to 3rd whenever you want. After all these years I sometimes forget that Oblivion can be played in 1st person, lol.

I almost always play in 1st person because it makes me feel as if I'm in the story instead of guiding a character in the story. I love it that and only use 3rd person for certain things. To each their own...another reason it's so good...you can choose. :)

The similarities in control systems between FO3 and Oblivion are deceptive because of the big differences in gameplay and tone. I actually think that FO3 is more like Morrowind than Oblivion, with its bleak environment and weird monsters, and especially in having far less level-scaling than Oblivion. I'd recommend Morrowind if you can get it cheaply; just don't expect the graphical splendour of the newer games.

The two games use very similar (if not identical) engines but they are comletely different games. The problem seems to be that your trying too hard to compair them. I think thats why a lot of Morrowind players don't like Oblivion and visa-versa. People try to compair them even though theyare two completely different games. Fallout3 does use a lot of the same mechanics that Oblivion does though.

I'm a fan of both Oblivion and Fallout. I've started out with Oblivion and I found it difficult because it was my first elder scrolls game. After almost a full year of gameplay, i've started to master the game, well I actually had almost all the quests done the day before fallout 3 came out. When it did come out the transition was slow but I was able to adjust pretty well now I was relying on health items where oblivion I had used magic to heal. Another issue I had was with the amount of weight I could carry, in fallout 3 I was constantly dropping/selling items where oblivion I could carry over 2000 pounds of items. I know magic was taken out to add realism but this game deals with mutations, people who take headshots like nothing, and bodies exploding from simple punching. Fallout 3 is just oblivion with a different map, less features, guns, and worse graphics. I could see in the games data files that they register as oblivion plugins and master files. I think they should have just left in the magic, they could have incorporated it as a mutation from radiation. Fallout 3 is a much harder game than Oblivion ever was and forces you to explore a ugly wasteland. They should have forced you to explore Cyrodill because that would have been more fun. Oblivion is hard to get into during your first time especially if you never played previous elder scrolls games or do not like med evil stuff. Fallout 3 is harder to get into and it has almost no replay value when you compare it to oblivion. Yes you could do over the story as different build, alignment but it still can't compare to the oblivion's epic gamplay.

Same here. I never had a problem getting into both. They are different experiences in my mind but both are hella-fun.
