A character with no magicka

Post » Wed Mar 12, 2014 4:01 pm

Hi! I've always played the elder scroll games as a character with no magic spells and abilites. And I wonder if do the same in the elder scrolls online, will I be less powerful than a magicka user?

I kinda don't want to be forced to use magic spells/abilities.

You can just put a bunch of weapon and fighter guild skills on your bar, but really limiting your options in doing so. Also, the closed beta testers are saying a stamina only build is difficult to do, and not until later in the game.

In short, the path of least resistance will be using that magic bar they give you :icecream:

I'd say that is impossible; I pretty much was on the same boat as you and wanted no magicka abilities, being a full fledged warrior. Sadly, you can't do that here as a lot of skills require magicka to use. Some skills also require stamina and I think you'd be gimping yourself if you only relied on stamina-based skills. Just my observation though as I only tried out last beta weekend.

I've thought about how to do this, and my build would be a Wood Elf (for racials to help with stamina recovery, stealth, and bow expertise), go with bow martial (and maybe backup dual wielding?), use fighter's guild stuff maybe... but Nigtblade passives (remember, you only need to SLOT the actives to receive XP in the line, which will eventually let you have the passives of that class ability line without ever having used the actives (magicka based))...

Just my thought on making a stamina-user instead... think I will work on a build, then post it on here.

Well that's sad :( I want to play as a simple warrior, not a dragon knight who runs around with spikes and [censored] sticking out of his back

A good idea, but what if I want to be a tanky person. Any idea of how that might go?

Pick a nightblade and go with the assassination skills. All the class skills are overly flashy, but those tend to be the most... played down.

You will need to. All class skills are magika based. The distribution and allocation is different to previous Elder Scrolls. I'm not a fan of this myself, but that's how it is.

Thanks for the info guys!

Although i can't be the only one who thinks it a bit stupid that one of the main characters in the trailers is a brute warrior with no magic abilities, and yet we can't play exactly like that.

what do you guys think?

Well going by that, my caster should be able to fling enemies around the screen with telekinesis, so... I see no issue with this :D

I brought this up in this thread, seemingly we're in a minority.

As a chronic alt-aholic I tried just about every concept I could come up with over the last few beta weekends. The most effective was when I tried to split my bar skills half stamina, half magica. This let me use two resource pools so that I rarely exhausted one during a fight. From what I am hearing around the interwebz the current suggestion is to put all your stat points into health and use equipment to raise stamina and magica for leveling then respec when you hit end game.

While pvping though I had a rogue character that I went 1 point in stam every three levels and the rest into health. The value of stamina in pvp cannot be undervalued, but if your out of health how much mana/stam you have left is not very relevant. I think they will likely do quite a bit of adjusting over the next couple weeks to make the "everything into health" less of a standard and more of an option.

I think people put too much importance on the term "magic". There are plenty of magical abilities that feel like physical attacks simply because of the animation. What resource pool the ability draws from makes no difference.

I don't agree. If I want a character to primarily roll, sprint more or use weapons skills and only add to stamina when levelling, but barely use class skills I am disadvantaged by not using these skills given the auto increase of magika and the soft cap. They've virtually made it mandatory and so have removed options.

actually its the other way around at endgame you put all points into health, not while levelling. While you level you split them up. The gear at endgame helps you overcharge on your stamina and magicka stats.

I would be surprised if ZoS encourages this, it's pretty much common knowledge on how to allocate points at end game.

Thats hilarious if I've had it backwards the whole time. Although I did a hell of allot better investing in health than I did with my stamina only build.

They will most likely balance it better.
