Megaservers

Are there going to be more servers than the Megaservers? Like 'normal' servers with less people online. And will roleplayers have a server on their own? Or are we all playing together as one happy bunch? :)

2 Megaservers are all there is (though the PVP area works slightly differently I believe). Segregation is by side of the atlantic only, after that everyoneone is in together.

Lets hope people playing the game in different styles are tolerant to each other then :)

Cyrodiil works a bit differently. It's divided into campaigns and you can join a less populated one if you want.

Roleplayers have an option to be grouped together at the start of the game. Doesn't mean you won't ever see non-roleplayers on your shard, but it will be easier to find like-minded people.

When you enter a game for the first time you will be presented with a survey. One of the questions involves whether or not you are a roleplayer. How you answer that survey determines, as far as possible, which phase you are placed into.

What is phasing? It's effectively automatic shard allocation. It's a feat of impossibility to have all the players in the world visible on your client at the same time (due to bandwidth requirements and server processing power). What the megaserver does is automatically place you in a phase - this is loosely based off of shards in other MMOs, except you transparently (unbeknownst to you) switch between them. So classically the megaserver will place you in phases with a population that best matches your survey and quest outcomes. It now seems that Zenimax are going to have your party as the most important deciding factor for which phase you will be placed into with their recent "we are investigating having parties in the same phase."

So nobody actually "plays" on the megaserver, it's basically an incredibly clever load balancer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Load_balancing_(computing)

At the end of the day make sure you select that you are a roleplayer. Also, if you do party up with people who are not roleplayers remember that you may not be in a roleplaying phase.

I think they scrapped the survey.

The survey, yes. But roleplaying shards were recently confirmed.

How are they going to go about finding what your playing preferences are, then? Do you have any idea? Has something else been implemented?

I want to stay as far away from non-roleplayers as possible. I hope they do *something* to differentiate...

I can't find the tweet now, but what I gathered is that it will work like the original survey, except in minature. Just a question to roleplayers. That's what they revealed, anyway; I still hope there will be a few more questions because I really liked the survey idea and I wish they hadn't scrapped it.

As already stated, you should be placed in a shard that has like minded people in it, so you can avoid PvP or PvE if you want to just Roleplay (although that is really PvE if you think about it)

I have noticed in the PST that I see tags showing up on the screen after I do things. Not sure if this is a beta thing or how the game tracks your activity. This activity is what is supposed to put you in a shard or instance with other players that do the same things. Not sure how that is going to work as I see some folks (namely me) crafting more so in the beginning and not so much at mid or higher levels.

It would be very interesting to have a simple menu full of radio buttons that could help the Megaservers sort the kind of people you want to be paired up with.
