ESO has no rivals ATM? Part 2

Post » Fri Mar 14, 2014 7:52 am

Continued from here:

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1494059-eso-has-no-rivals-atm/

I mean it seems the only rivals they have is Wildstar and Everquest next (Which is free)

The reason I am not including WoW is because WoD won't come out till december 2014.... So a lot of wow players I know are not going to sit around for 9 months of no content just to pay $50 when the content finally comes out.

tl;dr: It seems that ESO is going to be released in a great time period.

Ironically, I've just started playing WoW for the first time. So for me, it's in direct competition with ESO as I'm not actually sure I can afford to sub to both...

You will have to buy all the WoW expansion if you want to actually play the game completelly, that costs more than playing ESO for 1 year.

Actually, I got all the expansions up to Pandaria for free. So it will just be Draenor (if I'm still playing by then).

I really can't figure out what it is about wow...I tried to enjoy it so hard because i was playing with my friends but MAN

this game is so boring... stopped playing after killing Garrosh...

Easily one of the worst subs I ever wasted my money on.

But I don't hate it, i'ts decent. Since you already started it go max level too before you rate it.

2 Subs ain't a good idea.

So far what I'm getting from WoW is that the dungeons are fun (but queuing for one can take an age), but questing and crafting are both a bit grindy. Crafting and questing in the little bit of ESO that I played were both more fun. That said, it's very easy to group with my boyfriend's character and do stuff together (and I've had almost no phasing problems) which is, sadly, more than can be said for ESO at the moment.

There is also Neverwinter Online which is F2P and is coming out with an Icewind Dale expansion shortly. I've been playing that while waiting for ESO.

Seriously.

First of all EQ Next isn't due for release till next year as far as I know. Wildstar is obviously going to be a competitor and I don't know how or why you think it won't be. Then of course there are all the MMOs that are already out there like Lotro, AoC, SWTOR, Guildwars 2, etc, etc, etc. There are dozens of rival games that are very similar to ESO.

You're not doing ESO any favours by being blindly loyal and optimistic about it, but whatever.

I think dungeons are fun... at least the first time you do it, repeat dg runs used to piss me off. Questing and Crafting are VERY grindy in the higher levels, while in ESO It felt natural and fun actually.

It's hard to compare since what we played in ESO so far isn't the final product while wow've got years and years of practice. It all may change.

Lotro... ? How can anybody enjoy that game? It is just some watered down version of WoW to me. Maybe things changed by now but I remember trying it and quitting after 2 hours.

Funny enough i only see Skyrim as a threat !

There are so many TES players in ESO, and if they don't feel like they are getting their TES fix, they will leave for a "true" TES game.

I for one love ESO, but i have played TES since Arena, but with the right mindset that ESO is a hybrid, then ESO is one of the best mmorpg's to date..

Just my 2 cents

I see nothing else worth getting..

NOTHING!!

It's either too asian influenced or its a WoW/EQ/AoC/Lotro clone...

This is true... yesterday we got random-rolled back into the same dungeon four times. At least I didn't have to pick up the quests :P

Agree as well about what you say with the contrast. My boyfriend has something like 6 or 7 years' experience as a WoW player so everything there is like second nature for him, whereas ESO is a little like Skyrim but a completely different game. I like WoW but because I'm levelling so fast (Recruit a Friend bonus) I don't really feel like I've got to see the world properly. I actually turned off levelling when I made it to Northrend because it's so damn pretty and I want to do stuff before I get sent somewhere else!

ESO though... Skyrim is my favourite game ever, and finally there's a multiplayer TES game. If they get the bugs and niggles with grouping/phasing sorted out, it's hard to imagine myself having the time for another subscription-based MMO.

ESO is no different if you are looking at from an honest perspective other than the fact that it has voice acted quests and its based in the TES universe. If you remove the voiced acted quests , how is it any different from wow or gw2? The levelling process is the same , the end game will be similar, the pvp is large scale and similar to gw2 (or daoc)..Not that ESO is a bad game, it just needs some ironing out(especially combat and phasing) and the devs needs to reverse some of the design decisions they have made regarding the trade system. If they do that then ESO will have a broader appeal and be vastly more successful on the long run.

Edit: maybe add an incentive to actually group with others as well. And fix the damn sprinting animation before i die of laughter.

Way I see it, ESO has plenty of competition. There are tons of MMO players out there who are already subbed to a game they enjoy and have put incredible amounts of time into. The question is whether ESO has what it takes to pull them away from all of those memories and hours put in. For me, it most certainly does. There is also the the large group of traditional elder scrolls fans to consider. (Me being one of them, but also an avid mmo fan) Does ESO offer the experience they're looking for? If not, they'll surely return to their modded to death version of Skyrim.

But looking at how responsive Zeni is, I have hope that they can please both veteran mmo players as well as long time elder scrolls fans.

I cancelled my wow sub about 3 years ago. Played rift up til recently. Cancelled my sub about 2 weeks ago. I'm ready for release lol.

I'm not even actually playing it for the voice acted quests OR for the fact its a TES game..

For me its actually the combat.

Having to aim in the general direction of someone/something to hit it...

No standing around pressing 1,2,1,3,4 combinations while watching the cooldowns on the hotbar...

Fighting mobs that work together in groups rather than dying because you pulled two.

If ESO combat was like WOW, GW2, AoC etc etc I wouldn't be playing it, that would completely turn me off.

This is much more fluid.

The fact that there's awesome voice acting and that it is a TES game is simply a bonus for me.

I see!! :D Biggest mistake i committed back in WOW was this recruit a friend bonus... we(me and my friend) leveled within 2 weeks to 85 and didn't enjoy much content because everybody was like "hey this game gets real good at endgame bla bla..." which is not real if you don't take your time experiencing places and enjoying your character!

Arthas was my favorite character back in Warcraft Frozen Throne and I didn't even got to see his death :/ You make sure you enjoy Northrend properly =]

ESO will be competitive thanks to this hybrid thing with MMO and TES games i believe, as far as the bugs go I'm pretty sure ZOS will sort them out. I hear this next and final beta will have a lot of changes implemented.

But. But. But... Thats exactly what ESO is... how can you not see it? What exactly makes you think ESO is not a WoW/EQ/AoC/Lotro clone?

That doesn't mean its a "bad" game. All those games have had a reasonable amount of success. Personally I'm bored stupid with the genre and can't wait for someone to move things along. EQ Next might well be the one or it might not, but ESO sure isn't. Its another standard model with a handful of minor enhancements slapped with a themed paint job.

I'm not seeing anything from the people defending ESO that wasn't said by people defending SWTOR.

I partially agree with you. Developers have played it too safe since WoW. And there has been absolutely no innovation recently. Which is why i love the indie games developers, at least some of them are trying something new on a smaller scale.

Personally, I will be buying ESO but will probably jump ship when Archeage gets released in Europe. The main reason being that it is not your traditional railroaded zoned etc mmorpg and it has true freedom and free roaming in a huge world.
