[ This is in response to the ESO Massive Beta Test. These are my personal opinions and insight on ESO and issues I feel need to be addressed. ]
I've been playing on the mass beta test for several hours. Here's what I feel needs to be touched on.
Character Creation: For the most part character creation is what you would expect from an MMO. But not from Elder Scrolls.
Compared to other MMO's this is certainly the most in depth as far as character creation goes with the exception of one free to play mmo that is/was called Perfect World. That was very similar. However as far as an Elder Scrolls game goes, the character creation in ESO in my opinion is not up to par. The colors for one need some more attention. The majority of the time, for nearly all races; the displayed swatch/box of color doesn't match what's displayed on the character for both hair and eyes. Several of the skin colors you can't even disscern the difference between them. The hair choices for females is sub-par at best; not to mention the same for every race, except for khajiit and argonian. I think that a good fix for this would be to reimplement the color saturation box from oblivion. overall I give the ESO character creation a 3 out of 5.
Controls: I felt the controls to be awkward at best. Menu Navigation is an absolute pain. It's not intuitive at all, like I feel it ought to be. It seems like you forever need the tutorial / guide to show you what button to press and what it does at all times. I found the clunky lack of intuituve controls to be highly immersion breaking when your supposed to be in a high paced scenario; Only to stop what your doing and tuck yourself away in a dark corner to sit and stare at your screen; to carefully read every part of the dialogue just to make sure you select the right thing.
Why is this a big thing? - For me I prefer not to mess with control options too much and prefer to learn a games default control setup. I only change buttons when I feel it absolutely necessary. And for ESO I had to do just this within the first 5 minutes of game play.
Mouse / TouchPad: Most of my grief about controls derives from this segment here. I play on a laptop and as such use a touchpad. In ESO I noticed what I feel alot of players are going to have an issue about. Is that there's a 3-5 second delay when pressing the left or right mouse button. At times the delay was up to 15 seconds if the game chose to respond at all. In a game like ESO this is a serious flaw that will get a player killed and quickly. I shudder to think of having this problem in PVP where timing is key and you have this kind of delay. I know my touchpad settings are set for quick response but please make sure to check your settings.
Maps: Maps need roads. Just like in morrowind and skyrim; I hate the map that is used in ESO. I found it confusing and a lack of roads or a mini-map, even a local map option didn't help either. Yes quest markers are useful please keep them where they are. But I found myself running in circles or into alot of trouble just running in the direction of my quest marker because I have a sorry exscuse for a map. I'd almost be better off with the arrow from Crazy Taxi.
Inventory: Where shall I begin? To be blunt, this is horrible. All Characters per single account share bank space. ....Seriously? How stingy can you be? What happened to carry weight? Why not use Elder Scrolls tried and true carry weight? If you have the strength, you can carry it. This would lend to a deeper choice between heavy and light armor, or no armor at all. Not to mention This would be great for the ever faithful mule / merchant character. Don't get me wrong I understand the dreaded you are now over-encumbered. No one wants to walk for miles at a slow arrow to the knee pace. But in Elder Scrolls you just can not be this stingy with inventory.
I do like the whole shared mailbox. It's nice not to have to run down a mailbox just to send stuff to your alts. (Many hours spent on that quest [insert sarcasm.]) But not for bankspace. I feel this is a serious problem that needs to be immediately addressed. This is a game killer. It's simply not right to have the same bankspace for all your characters. It's a major deterent to the replay value of ESO. Why would I want to play more than one character to max level when my first has taken up all the room? It's not like player's are hoarders...unless it's for crafting, but still. This is a huge problem for the imminent success of ESO.
Quests: After the initial game play I noticed while speaking to the prophet that his text box and spoken dialouge didn't match up. In fact there were few times where the text wasn't even the same at all. The whole initial start of the game felt rushed and i don't mean the pace of the scenario. But I felt that there's supposed to be so much more to it than what it was. Yes this is the beta and it can still change. And it is true to Elder Scrolls, having you wake up in prison and not knowing how or why your there. It's just everything after that felt so rushed. It left more questions than even acceptable answers. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it dosen't hold your hand or have 5-20 mins of tutorial. I just think that it's missing something.
Also, there were still a few missing textures, but that may have been due to the volume or strain on the mega-server.
