Left handed Discrimination

Post » Mon Mar 17, 2014 6:01 am

I agree, a change that messes with everyone else's setup would be bad -- I'd be in there kicking up a fuss myself. But that doesn't preclude the possibility of designing things so both parties are happy. It's the sort of thing that needs clever thinking, but it's not rocket science, and he at least has to grace to ask nicely for consideration instead of demand it here and now.

At first I was thinking in favor of the OP, but after reading this, it makes more sense to me. I find this to be an acceptable reason.

I mean, once you rebind on your new character, you never have to again.

As for the initial rebind, I find this game no worse than other games. In fact, I find the game a little more lefty friendly than many, since I use the numpad, and having less abilities to have to bind, makes it easier. Granted, they finally made a lefty Razer Naga, but I don't think I'll need it for this game!

More options are better usually.

I'm a lefty as well. Had never heard of using a mouse left-handed until recent years. I've always used a mouse with my right hand and never thought twice about it.

I can get behind an option to help people out (especially if it makes no difference to me.) But it's not like all left-handed people need to use a keyboard and mouse a certain way. I'm not even sure a majority of us do it any different than those crazy right-handed people.

It is a nice quote but Heinlein was a disturbed man.

I don't see it that way. I use a computer the way I feel comfortable using it. My left hand is my dominant hand, I would like to use that hand for pointing and aiming. I don't care if you're left handed and use your mouse in the right hand - that's your own doing. I'm not asking every game to cater defaults to my setup, I'm asking for profiles, options. Yes, I drive a standard and use my non-dominant hand for shifting. I do wish it was the opposite, and I could shift with my left.

But what you've done is a choice. It's not standard. You don't aim with your left hand 'better' than your right hand, you've trained yourself over years of using the setup to do so. Millions of left handed people use computers and play video games just fine. Do you have a 'left handed' controller for consoles? I doubt it- you just grew up using the controller the way it was designed. If you had used the computer the way it was designed, over the years you would have gotten used to it, just as you can drive completely fine while using your right hand to shift.

If people start choosing to change the standard setup for things, that's fine. But expecting every company to cater to your nonstandard way of doing things is kind of absurd. You chose to change it, and now you want your niche to be catered to. It's unrealistic.

Most console controllers are symmetrical and designed ambidextrously. The pure right handed ones (N64 comes to mind) I held differently than most people, because I am not right handed.

No, it was not a choice. I was self taught and naturally I put the mouse in my left hand. Why? Because I was born that way. Did you pick up a pencil and put it in your non-dominant and chose to right that way? No, you did not. You picked up the pencil and wrote with the hand you are naturally dominant with.
